Okay, I REALLY want to make this hat.

Do you think that Knitpicks Wool of the Andes would be alright for a baby? The pattern used a more expensive merino wool. I was thinking I could substitute Knitpick merino, but the gauge is off. The wool of the andes is the right gauge, but I don't like the colors as much.

Last question, should I not ever try to make decisions when I'm tired and hormonal?

Cute hat! I think wook would work great. BUT make sure you've explored the possibilty that the recipient isn't allergic to wool. I've not worked with Wool of the Andes, so I can't speak to it. I think Amy recently ordered some though :??

As I would understand it, the Merino Style is softer than the WOTA. I think it's finer-spun. I would use the Merino for something that is going to touch someone's forehead.

Sometimes the only good thing you can do when you're tired and hormonal is make a nice ol' knitting decision! :happydance:

Yes, WOTA is rougher...the merino is much softer...I would use WOTA for a kids' hat, but not a baby's hat, if that makes any sense. Maybe KnitPicks Andean Silk? I think that is worsted weight, like the WOTA. If it's anything like the Andean Treasure..sooooo soft.

I would go with Andean Silk instead of WOTA. It'll be a lot softer. :)

Yes, Kelly, WTG on the WOTA abbreviation!

I've used knitpick's WOTA, Merino, and Andean Silk. The Merino knits up at 5.5 sts/inch, the others are slightly bulkier knitting up at a 4.5-5 sts/inch. The Merino's plenty soft. I agree, WOTA's not quite baby-worthy. Andean Silk is a DREAM. Not sure what gauge the pattern calls for. If 5 sts/inch, then you can use any of those yarns.

Hope that helps.

Andean silk gauge is roughly the same as WOTA when I've used it...lol!
I, too, think the merino will be the better of the 2...or best of the 3, whichever....If u have a girl...the pink "petal" in the merino is adorable!
