View Full Version : Posts about knitting related business and websites
I know there are worthy knitting-related businesses that many of us would love to hear about and check out. I invite small businesses who want to tell others about their websites to do so on this thread where I hope your business will be well received by others!
Let's keep our comments useful to visitors of these places. Suggestions to business owners can be emailed to them. Back and forth discussions should be on a new thread. Thanks! :)
Best wishes to all you budding business-people in the knitting world! I hope we'll all support friendly small businesses as we can, because it improves the quality of life for everyone!

Ahem.
Okay.
Ummm.
I started my on-line business as a labor of love for a few reasons. I like knitting with certain colors of needles. I hate throwing things away. I feel sad when things lose their mates. I'm a big dumpster diver.
So I started taraknit.
I'm thinking of getting rid of shipping and handling charges, and just adding more to the price of the needles. BUT this will entail some work on the database end (read: my son!) because a size 50 wooden straight needle costs more to ship than a set of four or five size Zero dpns.
I'm also thinking of selling brand new needles - but the only ones I'm thinking of having are Swallow casein, because they're the only biodegradable needles out there (that I know of). Unfortunately they don't have circs :(
I'm totally open to suggestions/comments/criticisms etc! And I love Amy's suggestion of making stitch markers (I do beading too)! Given that we're in the midst of packing up, the 'growth" aspect probably won't occur until early next month.
And thanks to you out their who have contacted me already and ordered some things!
:cheering: :D :D
I just placed an order from Carol, and I just want to chime in that I am VERY pleased. I got 10 sets of alluminum DPN's (40 needles total, to be clear), at only $2.32 per set of 4! I asked her if she had some accessories I needed and I got a new knitting gauge and several stitch holders for $2 total!
Carol, great ideas, I'll email you my thoughts.

This is a teaser, really. In a couple of weeks I'll be selling needle cases that I'm making. I've just finished the first one today.
I hope to have them in the $20-$50 range, so that they'll be affordable for everyone. Portions of sales will go to my knitting groups meager yarn stash, we're knitting chemo caps and helmet liners for troops.
I have a video clip of the first finished case, if you'd like to see it PM me.
I would *love* some PM's regarding what folks really like in a needle case.
Thanks, Amy for this space.

hello everyone - just a few things - my site will be expanding in the next month or so. I'll be adding stitch markers and, get this - DENISE INTERCHANGEABLES - and some other goodies as well!!!
There's no shipping charges now as I have wrapped that into the cost of the needles (in other words, the needles cost just a few cents more to cover the cost of shipping).
Always available to take in lonely singleton needles, and ANY kind of donation! Also will buy or swap used needles! :)
Thanks for looking!

Hello, my name is Stephanie, and I'm the owner of Katiyana's Collectibles.
I've been knitting since I was 13 and 3 years ago I decided to turn my hobby into something more by making doll clothes. :XX:
I sell in several online venues, including my own website (link below) - and am looking for new innovative techniques to use in my doll sweaters.

ooo Kat i have to share a couple doll boards with you, sweaters start at 25 on our board and they are sold usually in minutes of posting. I looked at yours and you could easy get triple your price in the fashion doll market. double your price and you will sell out with no inventory. Most on our site are plain. We have a girl and her mom from sweden does a couple intarsias and they are much higher and she only ever has maybe 2 or 3 and they are sold so fast no one gets a chance at them.

Oh I'd be very curious to hear about those sites!
My items are custom-made after a sale is made, which makes it a little more stressful to me, but buyers love being able to pick the colors of their purchases, ya know?
And wow - $25? *thud* I would love it if you'd shoot me a PM with the URL's to those :cheering:

Cool thanks!!
I love making up my own designs for my dolls. I have a simple rope cable twist design that is really popular. 8)
Once you have the basic pattern down for length, width, arms, etc, you can play with the stitches and come up with some great variations!
I've got a long list of cable variations & popcorn bobbles I want to try out.

My online business is celebrating its 3rd anniversary this week!!! It's called Nicole's Crochet Bistro (http://www.geocities.com/nicolethegeek), and I started it off with just my crochet designs. It's expanded over this time with free patterns; crochet-alongs; and 2 email groups, one for general crafting chat, the other for a dishcloth-along. Now that I knit, I have a few knitting patterns and such up with more to follow. As part of my anniversary celebrations, I started a dedicated sales division entitled The Purl in the Oyster (http://members.shaw.ca/nicolethegeek). It's still in the beginning stages with the main items for sale being my new custom and personalized stitch markers, as well as my existing patterns.

Hi all,
I love to hand dye yarns, but I can't knit fast enought, or at least not as fast as I dye, so I have opened an etsy shop (http://lux2night.etsy.com) to sell my overflow yarn.
Please take a look, I just listed some merino superwash sock yarn in the Project Spectrum April (http://www.flickr.com/groups/project_spectrum/) colors!

:heart:I am Donna Scroggins. I am a speech pathologist in a school, work as a counselor with juvenille delinquents, have three young adult children, three toddler grandsons and three dogs. The only things that keep me sane are my hobbies. I would love to tell you that I am a prolific knitter, but I have MS and have difficulty with the pattern sequencing. To tell the truth, I can't get past knit, purl, knit, purl, but my mom is an awesome knitter. She can do sox with the little sticks which brings us to the topic of stitch markers. She pulled out this little chicken charm on a clasp and said "Instead of designing earrings, why don't you make some of these?" I made four sets that night. I love working with the colors and the beads and coming up with a theme and have recently started designing my own beads with polymer clay. :cheering:
I love your website and think it is wonderful that knitters have a place to come together. My mother is apartment bound and loves your website. She visits frequently and it really helps energize her and I thank you for that because I know she is not the only person that feels that way. I also appreciate the opportunity you are providing me by allowing me to tell others about my business. I am working hard to help it grow in the event that I need to retire early. :inlove:
You can find my Stitch Markers at http://www.beadedbeauty.etsy.com and also on ebay. My seller ID is dks107. I will be listing some earrings that match them. I am in the process of trying to publish my website to the internet. I haven't been successful with this yet. I am really excited about having the opportunity to network with other crafters and small business people :D and look forward to getting to know you. Happy Knitting :XX:

Hello everyone - with much teeth gnashing and sleepless nights attempting to come to a decision, I have finally decided that TaraKnit.com is no more.
I had SUCH a blast this past year (it's been a year already, I cannot believe it) with the site, and esp. with 'meeting' all the cool people who wrote to comment and order from me.
There are some really good changes in my life right now, and I need to re-focus my energies on these new things (no, I'm NOT pregnant ! LOL)
I'll be donating some things to charity, so if anyone has a personal relationship with a charity that can use knitting/crocheting needles, let me know. I'll also be selling some things on ebay, esp the new bamboo dpns I have. I'm greentara33 there.
One upside to putting TaraKnit to bed is that now I'll have more time to post here!!!
Again much affection to all of you who have been customers and cheerleaders and well *sniff* I'm gonna miss it. Maybe I'll reinvigorate the site when I'm retired!
Love to all, Carol

Hi!
My name is Cynthia and I'm the owner of Plumknit. I initially started Plumknit to sell my hand knit items but once my yarn stash started overflowing out of my craft room I knew it was time to expand the business plan. I'm very excited to introduce my new yarn store: http://hyenacart.com/plumknityarnsupply
I specialize in high quality, earth friendly, natural fiber yarns. Plumknit is know for it's incredible Cashmere but I also have Wool/Cashmere, Silk, Bamboo & Soy yarn.
A bit about me: I am a happy stay at home mom to two beautiful boys, Benjamin and Jesse. My grandmother taught me to knit when I was 8 years old. I started hoarding yarn about 5 years ago and then selling it about a year ago. I love yarn, but on
