Sounds like children's programming is getting scarier and scarier! I didn't think there could ever be anything more annoying than barney...and I'm not even tortured by having to listen to it every day. I think I'll have to check these Wiggle people out in the name of research :)

I'm with Nuno...they might be irritating but no way, no how, can anything even touch the ICK level of Barney. Heck, I'll even let my kids watch that creepy Boobah show on occasion...but NEVER Barney. We live in a Barney-free zone. Ick, ick, ick.

I taught my grandson to say "Barney is dumb" when he was about two so I could avoid having it on.

The Wiggles are just lame, buy innocent enough. I think the kids who love them now will tire of them quickly when they get to the point where they see things that are a little more "sophisticated."

I kind of liked Teletubbies, though!

My sister-in-laws neice HAD to have a Barney birthday cake when she was two and they searched high and low for a cake pan shaped like the purple lord of all that is unholy. They got it, made the dang cake, only to have her literally FREAK out when the cake got cut up to eat...
Scooby Doo is now her new friend.... 'nuff said

"I hate you, you hate me... Let's hang Barney from a tree..."

My apologies to anyone, I am only joking, although Barney bugs me too, I am all for anything that entertains in a harmless way.... Kids don't stay kids as long anymore...sigh, I miss Easy Reader.... I thought the Electric Company was filmed up here, since they had "Fargo NorthDecoder" and I live in Fargo North Dakota... who knew?

koolbreeze

My son (he's 27 now) learned to read at 4 because of the Letter People and the Electric Company. I read to my kids all the time, too, so I get some credit, but the actual mechanics came from these shows.

Not that my mom used the TV as a babysitter, but the only way she could bathe regularly for all of the first 5 yrs of the 70's was thanks to Sesame Street. Aparently my favorite line was "It's the clummer, and I've come to fix the sink..." :roflhard: She says I had trouble saying PLumber, so I said CLummer instead.
My faves were Electric Co. (who knew Easy Reader would eventually Drive Miss Daisy?) and Capt. Kangaroo... gotta love Mr. Moose and Mr. Rabbit.... And I know my name is Simon, and the things I draw come true....
Wahhhhh, I wanna be a kid again!!!!!! :D

i gotta tell ya...i use to be a manager at a company that took orders for all those infomercials that ya see on tv...and one of the biggest sellers (even after the "incident!") was the PeeWee's Playhouse videos. The people who called all talked about how great the shows were...HUGE seller!!

Agreed Nik. LOL.

I TOTALLY remember 321 Contact!!! Actually, not the show so much as the intro: 3! 2! 1! Contact. That was the coolest intro ever. :happydance:

Can I just say...
"Kudos to PBS!"

I wish all television was so good!
I babysat for 3 girls a few years ago, and I remember watching a show the 11 year old was watching, and saying, "Oh my God, these cartoon kids are like...like the kids your parents don't want you to know!" She said, "Yeah, that's the tagline of the show." I forget the name of the show, but the tagline was apparently something like, "We're the kids your parents don't want you to know." And they WERE. Like the worst examples you could imagine your kids being exposed to; and they made a television show out of it!! Not on PBS of course.

Mr. Green Jeans was a character on Captain Kangaroo. Something I always liked about him! There is a picture of him HERE (http://www.tvacres.com/child_mrgreenjeans.htm).

Ingrid
07-15-2005, 10:15 AM
Mr. Greenjeans was Captain Kangaroos sidekick. When I watched Captain Kangaroo, in the '50's, BTW, I thought he was an old man. Many, many years later I saw him on TV, when he WAS an actual old man, and it turns out he was only about 27 when the show came out.

The girl from 3-2-1 Contact has had quite the career, huh! :D

LOL PBS KIds is the best!!! My 4yr old is into Scooby doo though and the Super Heroes.. Although we had to stop his watching a dvd of superman he thought he could fly tooo... Roo likes boobahhh have no idea why and Teletubbies and Barney although I cringe at all 3 I can handle the wiggles the best LOL. They have set TV times although normally our TV if on is set to a kids channel so I don't have to worry about what they see/hear they just continue to play. Rugrats can't be watched cause my son didn't want to be Tommy he wanted to be Angelica.. LOL I use to watch Seasme St. and Mister Rogers and some show where the adults were dressed like animals there was a pink cat and a fox.. and something else. I also watced PeeWee growing up LOL before his incident.. I loved that show!!

.... :( I also use to be a HUGE NKOB fan Jordan!!!! was my crazy stage..

For the first season at least there was a younger sister. I think her mother asked for more money so they eliminated her without any explanation on the show. She was the main support of her family, and the burden was so much she eventually took what was offered. A shame for anyone.

I like the Wiggles. ;) Here's a little biography on them at Yahoo music.

http://music.yahoo.com/ar-303652-bio--The-Wiggles

The first time I heard of them was just before their American invasion. An Australian friend of mine asked me if I ever heard of them, since they were already big in Australia. I have two toddler nieces who watch their show often, though today the older one, "K", shrieked and covered her ears when the "Fruit Salad" song came on. :rofling: K's mom took her to one of their live shows when their tour came to Los Angeles.

I think at least two of the Wiggles are married (thought I read that somewhere, anyway).

As for Barney, I saw him as harmless, especially when my daughter at age two began spelling ZOO and STOP after watching a video. She's nearly 10 now and in the gifted program at school so Barney didn't do any noticeable damage. :D

Ingrid
07-15-2005, 05:33 PM
When I first saw Barney, I couldn't understand why no adults seemed to like it. Then I realized for me, it was that the kids on it were so old. And polished. I'm sorry, 12-year-old kids don't sing the Choo-Choo song and do all the nonsense they do. And they end every song by speaking the last few words. Barfdom!
