Help for first time sweater knnitter

I'm working on my first sweater & so far everything is going well, but I'm stuck on the instrcutions for the front sweater panels- After the 2" ribbing I'm supposed to work in St st, keeping1 st at front edge in garter st- I'm not sure about the "1 st in front of garter st " part - help!

I would take that to mean that no matter what you do as far as pattern on each row, in this case you're doing stockinette stitch, you will ALWAYS knit one stitch at each beginning and end of the row. This way you have a nice selvedge edge for seaming up later.

And in this case if the front edge is the cardigan edge, it gives a nice edge for that, too.
