I need some help with gage. I am very mathematically challenged!!

I have this great shawl pattern that I made for my wedding. Now my girlfriends are commissioning me to make them one out of an array of different types of yarn. I live in a town off the grid so I will have to buy my yarn online. How do I know how much to order for different types of yarn. I'm using size 9 needles, using two strands of yarn.

I would see what yarn is called for in the pattern and find out the yardage. If you are buying similar weight yarn, then just make sure you buy enough skeins of it to get the same amount of yardage. If you want to change the thickness of the yarn, then I'm really not sure.
