I've only knit a few things, but I'm trying to be adventurous and have started knitting "Polar Bear Mitts" from Robin Hansen's "knit mittens!" I'm not sure if it's just that I'm having a rough time reading the pattern, but after casting on 28 stitches and knitting until the length reaches 6.75", now I'm at where I'm supposed to make the thumb hole and all craziness has broken loose. It wants me to:

Knit 1, place on a piece of waste yarn--4 sts
with twisted M1, cast on--4 sts
knit to end of rnd. you will have--28 sts

Am I supposed to place a holder on those first 4 sts? It doesn't say! Since I originally cast on 28 and now it's asking for me to M1 for 4 sts to create a total of 28, I'm assuming that I need to get rid of 4 sts (otherwise I would get a total of 32), but it doesn't say that.

I know this is basic, but if someone could walk me through this or give me some tips as to a website or book to look at, that would be wonderful!!

They want you to put those 4 stitches on a piece of waste yarn to act as a yarn holder. A regular yarn holder would get in the way. Just thread a piece of yarn through those 4 with a tapestry needle or crochet hook to hold for later.
