Is there a rule of thumb for convering patterns for hats knit flat to being knit on circs or DPNs? I realize most people knit at a different gauge in their flat compared to their round knitting, so even if you cast on the same number of stitches in the round, it may end up a different size, and the decrease at the end would be different as well since you're not turning the work, right? I'd just rather not do seaming!

I was considering doing something like this for FIL after I had seen someone else's around here.

Rather than trying to convert a pattern, there are a gazillion hat patterns like that at www.knittingpatterncentral.com . This way you don't have to worry about any of that other stuff.

I generally just use this (http://www.mielkesfarm.com/bsic_hat.htm) basic hat formulat for most all of my hats ;)
