Best pattern for socks knit toe up

I want to make myself a pair of socks over the holidays. My first pair ever!

I've been looking around and think it's an awesome idea to knit the socks toe up to be able to check the size and everything while working on it. Now I wonder what pattern you guys prefer? And what cast on method you like?

Any thoughts?

The figure eight cast on method worked so awesome once I got the hang of it.
