Hello, ladies ...
I wish I knew more about Todd's likes and dislikes. Like I said, he just hasn't been well, and from what his mom was telling me, he's just really lost interest in a lot of things because he doesn't feel well. Hearing this really breaks my heart because a positive attitude and outlook can have such a profound effect on healing. I really, really wish I could make a suggestion for you. If you believe in prayer, perhaps you could pray on this and see what inspiration strikes you.
Also, I was just PMing w/ Horve this morning, and I'm considering suspending this KAL until Fall. Now, that said, it doesn't mean I wouldn't be happy to accept items for the kids; I just think it's more difficult to find things to knit this time of year. It's easy to make stuff for the little kids (stuffed animals, little sweaters, etc) and -- for some reason -- teenage girls (felted bags, Hipsters, belts, etc). But for the most part, I think people want to knit scarves & hats and other cool-weather items.
I don't know ... what do you all think? Does anyone have any great suggestions that would be appropriate for this time of year?

Julie, I have to admit that I have been stuck, for exactly the reasons you just mentioned. I had said that I would make something for Zachary, but other than a hat, which wouldn't quite be appropriate for this time of year, I don't know what to make him. If I can think of anything, I will certainly make something for him, or if you think of anything, let me know.

I can think of plenty!! coasters, book covers, ipod covers, cd cases, cotton hats (with brims), games (like checkers with it's own board--that's what I'll do for Todd!! HA Does he like to play? It would make him more sociable, hopefully)....I am sure there are plenty more.....

Thanks, Margie, and yes, it's tough this time of year, especially for the boy crowd!! For girls, you can always knit a bag or something, but the boys ... well ... I dunno!
So, if anyone comes up w/ something ingenious for the guys, please speak up!!!

Great ideas, Katy!! I've seen a Mancala set somewhere, too!

Maybe the summer off would be better for you, Julie. I'm sure we can keep on knitting and then you can start over after a break. You need some time with your kids and family for the summer.

Oh, Jan, that's very sweet. ;-) This is really not a big time consumer for me, though. I just don't feel like I'm doing a very good job offering suggestions. We will be going in to the hospital/clinic every 3 mos as it is, so we might as well take gifts along with us!
I am thinking about working on a couple of things for the Child Life Specialist and her assistant because they've done (and continue to do) so much for us and for the rest of the kids and their families.

Well, I have decided to make a game of checkers for Todd. Does anyone know how to make knitted buttons? Also, the newsboy cap is going to be fun!!

You mean for the checkers? What if you made an i-cord and than wrapped it around itself.
Oooo had to try it. I just used some scrap Encore worsted I had laying around and I think this would work well. Looks pretty cool, too! Of course if this ISN'T what you meant... then I just learned a new trick. ;)

That's cute, Jan, but what I was thinking was to take 4L milk carton lids and knit some sort of cover onto them.....like a drawstringie thing with the open circle on the inside of the lid....I hope you can visualize it!!

Oh I see what you mean. Getting it stay flat might be a problem, but it's worth a try!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I am going to start the hat this weekend!! I am very excited!! Also, I still need to figure out how to cover my milk carton lids to make the pieces for the checkers set. Ideas gratefully accepted!!

Solution found!!! For the checkers on the board, I will felt a big piece of fabric, and sew the fabric onto the caps!! I will let you know how it comes out!

Hey, Jul! I finally finished our 17-yr old friend's clogs! I bet he's 18 by now, no?

As you might have noticed, I've been a bit ... uh ... absent of late. It has just been insanely busy around our household the past few weeks, and I find myself w/out the time or energy to devote to KH like I have in the past. Honestly, that's probably a good thing, but I do miss chatting with everyone here.
Katy ... the checkerboard sounds really neat! I'm thinking they might just want to use it in the Childlife Center instead of passing it on, but we'll see.
And, Kelly, even though dear Patrick might be 18, he'd still love that someone made something for him! I think he's actually done w/ his chemo now. Thank God! :cheering:
We are going to be @ the Outpatient Clinic on Tues. ... I wish I could say for sure that we could swing over & pick up the cloggies, but I don't know if we'll have the time. As you know, we're heading to Disney on Thurs, and we have something to do every darn day between now and then, and I don't know HOW I'm going to get everything packed and all the laundry done, etc etc ... I guess it will get done, or we'll just leave w/out it.
OK ... we'll work something out w/ the cloggers ... I'll give you a call next week or somethin. <sigh> I need to go to bed ... ttys!!

Well, Julie, it is fine with me if they want to keep it....I'll just think of something else for him!!!

Katy --
I'll make sure they know it's for Todd. ;-) And, actually, it would probably be better if it went to him, anyway, because they have to disinfect all the toys after someone uses them. I guess my point before was that they're gonna LOVE it! They've been so amazed by the stuff you all have made. I don't think they knew that all of these unique items could be made simply by "knitting." :D

True enough (about the disinfection).. I worked in daycare once upon a time, and that's what they had to do every afternoon while the kids were sleeping!! Not my idea of fun, but very necessary!
