View Full Version : FINALLY FINISHED! Spring Saguaro T-Shirt

03-09-2006, 03:28 PM
I've decided to pull out one of my unfinished projects from last year. The "Saguaro" t-shirt from Knitter's magazine, Spring 2005. Maybe I'll actually finish it before summer is over this year!

Saguaro? How is that like a Saguaro? :?? Must be the colors on the model, but...

Anyhoo..it's a pretty sweater and I like the colors you've chosen!

03-09-2006, 04:16 PM
 I don't even know what a Saguaro is....lol.

I tell you, the names they come up with for these patterns is so funny. I always laugh at the ones on www.knitty.com It's almost like a contest to see who can come up with the most eye-catching name instead of the best pattern!

 I don't even know what a Saguaro is....lol.

Oh. :roflhard: It's a cactus only found in the desert of southwest Arizona. They are often the ones you see in old westerns because they're so distinctive. In case you are wondering it's pronounced "Suh-wah-roe", accent on the wah.

And yes, they do come up with some doozies for names! :roflhard:

Love those colors!

03-09-2006, 05:10 PM
Thanks! I like the lighter colors as well. The pattern design lends itself to bright, springy colors, I think. Also, the yellow, white, blue and green will go with almost everything I have in my wardrobe.

I'm using Aunt Lydia's "Denim" Quick Crochet Thread. It makes such a soft fabric, and feels wonderful while you're knitting with it.

Pretty. I love the colors :)

03-09-2006, 07:16 PM
Nice springy colors!! I really like that pattern!! :D

03-09-2006, 09:33 PM
What does a t-shirt have to do with cactus :?? Whatever, I like the colors you picked better than the ones the magazines picked. Can't wait to see it done. :XX: :XX: :XX:

03-09-2006, 09:46 PM
Your colors are definitely prettier and un-cactus-like!

03-09-2006, 09:56 PM
Pretty colors!

What does a t-shirt have to do with cactus :??

That's what I said! :roflhard: Only thing I can think of is the color. Someone had a good imagination. :roflhard:

03-10-2006, 11:43 AM
Either good imagination or desperation. I'll bet it was getting close to print time, and the magazine editor said, "OK, we MUST have a title for that t-shirt TODAY!"

03-10-2006, 02:58 PM
that is coming along nicely!!

can't wait to see it finished. :D

03-10-2006, 03:08 PM
I love the colors!!!

Can't wait to see it FO!

03-10-2006, 09:31 PM
I finished the back last year, and now I'm working on the front. I just hope it fits right and looks good! The colors are perfect for spring and summer. Thanks for all the encouragement, you guys!

03-30-2006, 12:59 AM
Well, tonight I finished the front of my spring t-shirt! (I finished the back last year, then set it aside because the weather was getting cold.) The stripes don't exactly match up, but that's okay. I like it anyway, because I made it all by myself.

Now, I have to make the sleeves, and then the seaming will begin. I've never seamed a sweater before, so I'm sure I'm in for a rude awakening.

Any seaming advice would be nice now. The shirt is knit with 100% cotton yarn (Aunt Lydia's Denim Crochet Thread). It's waist-length, with short sleeves. I'm a big girl, so it's a size 1X.

03-30-2006, 12:10 PM
Lovin' the colors!! Can't wait to see the finished product :D

03-30-2006, 05:01 PM
Cant wait to see it finished!!!!

03-31-2006, 11:34 PM
Here's a photo of the back and front of my t-shirt. I've started making the sleeves tonight. One of the hardest parts will be weaving in all those loose ends from the color changes!

04-04-2006, 03:31 PM
Maybe they had some seguaro juice and those lines are like
little cactuses.....

yours are nice colours!

04-04-2006, 03:44 PM
I love that! Kudos to you for choosing a sweater that required seaming, I'm a chicken when it comes to seaming so I chose a first sweater that I can knit in the round. It's beautiful, I can't wait to see your finished product!

04-09-2006, 10:35 PM
I finally finished knitting the sleeves for my Saguaro t-shirt last night. Now I can get down to seaming. Will this project never end?

04-10-2006, 12:23 AM
Sagauros have vertical ribs, kind of like the stripes on the sweater. Maybe that's what's behind the name?

Congratulations on finishing! Seaming isn't as hard as it seems, you'll do fine. I always procrastinate on that part and then once I actually do it it goes pretty fast

04-10-2006, 03:25 PM
I know everyone says this, but it is very true, your colors are fabulous

04-10-2006, 04:00 PM
FAB-U-LOUS! I love that word. :inlove:

Every time I hear it, I imagine a flagrantly homosexual man with spiked hair "singing" the word while holding up his arms and shaking his hands in the air.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm just hoping that these stripes will not look too "dizzy" when it's all put together. Maybe I should have stuck with just 3 colors instead of 4. (Talk about weaving - look at all those loose ends waiting for me!)

04-11-2006, 02:23 PM
Wow its looking really nice! Can't wait until you finish it and we see it ON ya!

04-12-2006, 10:07 AM
Ooh, very cool! I really like the construction of that shirt.

06-15-2006, 10:34 AM
FINALLY! I finished all the seaming and crochet edging last night. It took FOREVER, but I'm pleased with the end product.

It's a LOT bigger than I planned, because of course....I DIDN'T DO A GAUGE SWATCH!!!! Silly me. Oh well, it will just be a nice LOOSE top for the Spring and Summer. I've learned my lesson.

At least it wasn't an expensive lesson. I got the yarn (Aunt Lydia's "Baby Denim") on sale at Walmart for $2.50 a skein. It only took about 5 or 6 skeins to make, so that wasn't bad at all. The biggest investment was my time, I guess. But the yarn felt good in my hands, and I LEARNED A LOT!

06-15-2006, 10:39 AM
I love it! And you look so proud! Great job!

06-15-2006, 10:40 AM
:cheering: :cheering: :cheering: I LOVE it!! Really love the colors, the stripes, the total package! Great picture of you ;) :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:

06-15-2006, 11:15 AM
great colours :)

06-15-2006, 11:33 AM
That is absolutely fantastic!! Great colors and I think the finished product looks wonderful. I know you say it's "loose" but I think it looks really flattering. I would love to make one of those. :)

06-15-2006, 11:37 AM
That's a very beautiful piece of art, and you are very beautiful in it!!

:D :D :D :D :cheering: :cheering: :D :D :D :D :cheering: :cheering:

06-15-2006, 11:45 AM
Beautiful, Sandy! You and the shirt! :cheering:

06-15-2006, 01:28 PM
It looks fantastic on you!
Great job!

06-15-2006, 01:31 PM
I think it is FAB-U-LOUS!

06-15-2006, 01:35 PM

Yesterday at knit group, a friend and I were just looking at this pattern because the shop owner was wearing the sweater!!! I don't think it's a gauge swatch you needed to make, though, since her sweater also turned out bigger than she expected. I think if I make this sweater, I will make it a size smaller than I normally do.

It looks absolutely beautiful on you though!!!

06-15-2006, 02:30 PM
Wow! You guys are GREAT for my ego! I'm gonna finish something else tonight so I can get more compliments! :roflhard:

I'm wearing my top again now, getting ready to walk out the door. I want to see if anyone says anything about the top before I tell them I made it. Just curious about the general public's perception.

I'll be teaching 3 piano lessons, rehearsing with a men's quartet, a praise choir, and our sanctuary choir. That means my top will be seen by about 40 people tonight.

I'll let you know the results of my "screening". :D

06-15-2006, 02:35 PM
The colors are beautiful! I have such a hard time putting colors together!

I can't wait to hear what the general public thinks! It is such a pretty shirt.

06-15-2006, 02:36 PM
It really is gorgeous! Don't be disappointed if people don't say anything. It just means they assume you bought it because it's 'too nice' to be hand made. ;)

06-15-2006, 04:09 PM
It's fantastic!

I agree that the "Saguaro" in the pattern name has to be because of the vertical stripes... see the pattern on this saguaro?

06-15-2006, 08:09 PM
Gorgeous!! Great job...and, I agree, your colors are Fab-o!

06-15-2006, 08:16 PM
it looks great!!!

06-15-2006, 11:43 PM
Okay, the general public is BLIND! lol

Not a single comment. I'll wear it again another day, and this time I'll say, "Hey - did you know that I made this shirt?"

06-15-2006, 11:50 PM
LOL, girl, I know what you mean. The first time I wore my Green Gable, it was all I could do to not shout "HEY, I MADE THIS!!! TELL ME HOW HOT I LOOK!"

06-16-2006, 12:22 AM
That's a very beautiful piece of art, and you are very beautiful in it!!

:D :D :D :D :cheering: :cheering: :D :D :D :D :cheering: :cheering:

You are so sweet! I love all this encouragement!

06-16-2006, 12:25 AM
Beautiful, Sandy! You and the shirt! :cheering:

Wow! Even MORE encouragement!
I think I should run for Queen of the Knitting Goddesses!
I've been built up so much by you guys!

You're the best. :D

06-16-2006, 08:03 AM
See? When you knit something really nice, people don't notice. They just assume you bought it. That's a compliment in itself!

06-16-2006, 01:19 PM
Ingrid, you are so wise, as usual. I know you speak from experience, because you're such a great knitter.

When I grow up, I want to be like Ingrid! ;)

06-16-2006, 03:50 PM
What are you talking about? That top is gorgeous!

06-16-2006, 05:40 PM
LOL, girl, I know what you mean. The first time I wore my Green Gable, it was all I could do to not shout "HEY, I MADE THIS!!! TELL ME HOW HOT I LOOK!" :roflhard:

I remember that top. You did a great job, and you DID look hot!

06-16-2006, 05:53 PM
Hey! How funny - I saved that Knitter's because I really liked that top too! I'm so glad to see someone has made it! And it DID turn out great! I'm very impressed and I like your color choices better. :inlove:

06-16-2006, 06:37 PM

06-17-2006, 10:17 PM
Yippee! Someone noticed my top! :happydance:

I went to Walmart tonight to grab a quick skein of Caron Simply Soft because my cousin is having a baby shower next week. (I attached a photo below of the yarns I bought. I'll be making a small blanket with the Bright and Lofty, and a hat and booties with the Simply Soft.)

Anyway, when I got to the register, the lady there said, "Oh what pretty yarn. Do you knit?" I said that yes I do. Then she looked at my top and said, "Did you knit your top?" My eyes opened wide, and I smiled and said, "Yes I did!" She just went on and on about what a great job I did.

I told her that I really appreciated the compliment. She really made my night.

When I got home, I told my husband about it and he was so happy for me. He knows that I was waiting for someone to notice my knitting. :D

06-17-2006, 10:51 PM
:cheering: :cheering: :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:
So, the key to having your knitting noticed, is to have a ball of yarn in your hand. ;)

06-18-2006, 08:41 PM
Apparently! I guess I should go sit in a public place with a ball of yarn in my hand. Maybe I'll knit a little too. :XX:

Let the compliments begin, General Public! :roflhard:

06-20-2006, 09:44 PM
It looks fantabulous! Deliciously springy colors!

I'd be struttin' my stuff if I wore it too!
