What does "make 1 st" mean?

I saw this beret pattern having the follwing line:

M1 (make 1 st)

what does that mean?

There are several different kinds of increases available. If you look at the Abbreviations Explained (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/abbreviations_explained/) tab above Amy has videos on increasing (near the bottom on the left).

Basically you use the stitch below to create a new loop and knit into the back of that.
