What is felted? What is worsted weight?

Felted is what happens when you put a wool item in hot water and agitate it so that it gets denser and fuzzy and the stitches disappear.

Worsted weight is a particular weight of yarn. Check out http://www.yarndex.com to see yarns of different weights. My explanation is VERY high level. The different weights of yarn are due to how they're spun and plied. The different weights give you different gauge and so on.

you know when you accidentially wash a 100% wool sweater in the washing machiene and it shrinks? that done on purpose to something that was knitted is felting. here's a link to a good article on knitty.com about felting. http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter03/FEATfelthis.html

worsted weight is a yarn weight. yarn comes in different thicknesses. worsted is the most common and is a medium thickness. Here's a good chart about yarn weights. http://www.yarnstandards.com/weight.html

Why would they felt anything on purpose?

Felting creates a denser fabric than just knitting. You can make a lot of fun things through felting - the most popular being bags and clogs (at least on this forum!). My felted clogs are my favorite winter footwear - they're so warm!

Felting makes a pretty, thick, durable fabric. it's great for purses, slippers and other things as well. the booga bag (http://www.blacksheepbags.com/booga_bag.html) is a pattern that you felt when done, just so you can see what a felted purse looks like.

Additionally, if you felt something, I believe you can cut it and sew it into something else! Pretty cool!

Hm, I have felted 2 beautiful sweaters (of victoria secret and tommy hilfiger) and I had to throw them away. Maybe I should have saved them and make a bag or 2... :crying:
