i was :XX: on a new project and i was just coming to the end of the head of the animal (a whale) when i came upon an unknown abbreviation (b&T) and could not fathom what it means. i am not told to cast off either.

My first guess is that it's a typo and it should be w & t (wrap & turn) since that's what's used for shaping with short rows.

What do the directions say before and after the 'b&t?

I would agree with Ingrid
