Knitty's Soleil pattern question

Hello all,
On the "Back Neck" section of the pattern, it reads "next row (RS) K16, join new yarn, BO 36 sts, k to end."

What does "join new yarn" mean?

You will drop the "old" ball of yarn after you have knit the 16 stitches, and start knitting (actually binding off the 36 stitches) with a new ball of yarn, so that each shoulder will have its own ball of yarn. You can just start knitting with the new yarn, leaving a bit of a tail that you will weave in later.
