ok I was looking at some yarn online and would like to buy some that I found but it will be coming from the US. Have any aussie knitters bought from overseas, and if so do customs put it in quarantine or even worse confiscate it?

I'm close enough, I suppse. LOL

I've never had a problem with stuff being sent from the states. It takes a while for shipping, but other than that.... ?? I can't think of any reason why it would cause hassle. HTH

I checked the Customs website (http://www.customs.gov.au/), and the only related thing that's a restricted import is "Woolpacks used for the storage and transporting of greasy wool or scoured wool.". You're not wanting to buy greasy wool, I assume.

Apart from that, "All goods (except for tobacco products and alcoholic beverages) may be imported duty and tax free if their value is $1,000 or less." So it's worth making sure you buy less than $1000 worth at a time :).
