My son wants to be "Captain Jack Sparrow" for Halloween. And not just the regular pirate garb. The hair, the mustache, the beard the hat the sword the clothes etc, etc, etc.....

I swear this is going to cost me a fortune. I was thinking there has got to be a way I could felt him some dreads for hair and a beard....any ideas?

Maybe you can adapt these?

There are "direction" so to speak of knitted dreadlock Tracy Ullman made in her new book Knit 2 Together, on page 41. Just just kind of describes how she did it, instead of giving step-by-step instructions.

Have you thought about using roving? Get some black roving, roll it into a big fat thick pencil-like thing, stick it in some pantyhose and felt it by hand in some hot soapy water. Your son could help with this project, too. If you do 7 or 8 peices, you could just sew them into the inside of a hat.

I have been experimenting making dread falls out of wool. I got some ideas on this website (the one i am linking has a tutorial using synthetic hair but you can adapt it to wool pretty easily). Here is the link:

I just toyed around with making a fall out of left over malabrigo (omg drool)... it was cute here is a pic of my first try:

This site has some terrific tutorials (and photos) of making dreadlocks out of synthetic hair (sally beauty supply, less than $7/pack).

It even shows you how you can braid them into real hair for easy removal afterward, or attach them to something for falls and pieces.
