A friend wants me to knit her a scarf (she's paying me for it too!) and she asked for the colour "navy blue and slightly marbled". She is rather conservative in her tastes, so no eyelash, no glitter for sure. I thought of Knitpick's shamrock, but the colours might be too contrasting for her... any ideas of the yarn I can use? She said she "trusts my judgement" but I wouldn't want to spend all this time knitting something for her if she ends up not liking it...

Good Morning1
Have you looked at Caron's Simply Soft Shadows? or one of the yarns in Patons collection?
Simply soft is a great yarn to work with! hope that helps

I think you should have her choose the yarn instead of risking getting something she won't like. (What does "slightly marbled" mean anyway?) Maybe you can send her a link to the knitpicks yarn. At least then you'll have a starting point for comparison. (She can tell you, "less marbled," or whatever.) I'd ask about fiber preference too. If it were me, I'd definitely prefer merino or alpaca or something non-irritating for a scarf. You might want to make sure she's willing to hand-wash if necessary as well.

OR the Simply Soft Tweed; it's only got occasional flecks of color in it. BTW, I found SS Shadows to be less soft than the original.

I would use this: blue wool (http://cgi.ebay.com/Handpainted-Merino-Wool-Knitting-Felting-Yarn-3-5-oz_W0QQitemZ330003069731QQihZ014QQcategoryZ83944QQ cmdZViewItem) because I have some in my stash and it's sooooo wonderful and squooshy and soft, and the color is gorgeous. Or there's always malabrigo (http://yarn.com/webs/0/0/0/0-1001-1294-1323/0/24/1226/) (of course) which has subtle color variations. :D

I like Reynold's Oddysey (http://www.yarndex.com/yarn.cfm?yarn_id=781). The Demin colorway is pretty.

I have it in the Rust and Red colorways; they have a very subtle self-striping effect.

Here are a couple of suggestions for a blue variegated.

Both of these are very pretty blues and would look great in a scarf.

Sirdar Denim yarn in Denim Blue is what I thought of immediately that you said "navy and marbled" Heres a link (its a UK site you'd do better to search your yarn shops over there since its an internationally available brand) http://angelyarns.com/sirdar/knit.php/yarn/311

I vote for mmmalabrigo.

This color (http://www.yarnzilla.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_1235_1236&products_id=5118) looks like it might fit the bill.
