Can someone show/tell me again how they do the fake double knit to make a hat? I tried to find it in search but can't find it. I think Indgrid posted a picture of one and how she made a single hat but made it doubled for thickness. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, Thanks!

Jackie

Here (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6251&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=hat+son+double) is the one I made.

Make one hat in the round from the bottom up using a provisional cast on. When that hat is done, undo the provisional cast on and put the stitches on your circular needle and knit a second hat in the other direction. When finished, tuck one inside the other and you're done! :happydance:

That's exactly the one I was looking for! Thanks Ingrid.

sorry I misspelled your name in original post.

Thanks to you too Knitqueen. I guess you can make a reversible hat this way. Two hats in one.

Oh I'm going to give this a try. I want to make a scarf, toque and mittens for my son. He's been asking me to make one for him in yellow but I wanted to add some blue to it too..now I can do a double hat.

I made one of these for my DH and it does make a reversible, very warm hat!

I just started another new one for my DH.. they are the only things he ever asks me to knit because he works outside and YES they are warm! the technique KQ described above is EXACTLY what I do. So, you can pretty much use ANY hat pattern with which to do it, just use the provisional CO.

OH.. one more thing. as you are knitting the first hat, keep good track of how many rows you knit before the dc's start... that way you are SURE the second hat will match!

I don't understand the "undo the provisional cast on". Couldn't I just pick up the stitches and start from there? I'm scared to "undo" anything.

If you pick up the stitches, you're going to have a ridge on the opposite side. It will create a bump on the inside of the hat. The provisional cast on will pop out one stitch at a time, so you can insert your needle one at a time. The starting end of the knitting doesn't want to unravel the way the top edge does, so there's no real danger of losing stitches.

Okay, I understand now. Thanks!

I want to do this too but I am not sure how to undo the provisional cast on do I just take out the yarn thats holding the stitches?

 I wish I had taken a pic before I undid my provisional CO last night...

You would use scrap yarn for the provisional CO and then knit into it. then, you undo it 1 st at a time while you reinsert your needle.

blueeyes, I don't know if you've seen it or not, but Amy has a video on provisional cast-on (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/videos//cast-on/invisible-co-rds.mpg) if that would help. And I'm SO GLAD for this post--I wanted to make myself a double-knitted hat, but I didn't want to try to attempt to do this because double-knitting looked too hard for me. I too wondered if you could just pick up the stitches to make another hat so I'm glad you asked your question, Jackie. Ingrid, your method looks very doable and makes sense to me--I'm SO GLAD you posted your project. Once again, Ingrid saves the day! :notworthy:

Ive made 5 of these hats for various men.. DH, BIL, DB... they LOVE them, especially when they work outside! This one is made of 1824 wool... its aran weight & I think its going to be the warmest of them ALL!!

I love it KK!

So yours is a fake double knit and not an actual double knit, right?

Who is the clown under the hat? :teehee:

:teehee:

It is a "fake" double knit hat. I did knit an ACTUAL DK hat some time ago, but when I found this technique... I think it was a free Elann pattern for a baby hat with sock yarn.... I found it accomplishes the same thing much faster and easier.
