View Full Version : pattern adjustments?

i recently learned how to knit and decided i would knit scarves for my friends for christmas. i found a broken rib knit pattern in a book and decided to try it out.
it looks like this:
CO 26
Row 1: K2 * P2, K2 *
Row 2: Knit to end of row
Repeat 1 & 2

i started the pattern (only cast on 14 stitches for a thin scarf) and i really liked the look of it. the problem i have is that it curls.
is there anything i can change to reduce the curl? i was thinking i could K3 *P2,K3* but i'm not sure how effective that would be.
was also considering adding a P2 at the beginning and end of row 2 every few rows to get a small chunk of stockinette on the WS, but, i'm afraid that would really change the look of the pattern/scarf.

any ideas? thanks!

This type of stitch pattern shouldn't curl. If it does, it would just be a little bit on each edge but because it's a rib pattern so that should be about all the curling trouble you'd have. Have you made any progress??

i decided to change the pattern trying to prevent curling:

K3, P2, K2, P1, K2, P2, K3

and it's still the same. i've gotten pretty far with it and don't really have the heart to redo it so i'm hoping blocking in the end will help.

i've also been adding a few random purls on the other side. so instead of knitting every other row straight i've been doing:

K1, P1, K11, P1, K1 on random rows

in hopes of somewhat preventing curls.

here are a few pictures:

i layed out the piece flat in these images. i'll try to get a shot of the curling soon.

Where is it curling, or do you just have it stretched out? Looks good. The only think I could think of would be to use a larger needle.

this is how it curls:

from the right side:

and from the wrong side:

it's almost more of a fold than a curl.

I've had that happen, too. Blocking does help.
