Wow, I never knew that Cat Bordhi was a teacher. Fascinating story....

Wow, that is fascinating! And it helps solidify views that have been taking shape in my own mind regarding knitting as a complementary activity.

I've finally reached a point in my knitting at which I can knit without losing concentration on my primary tasks (reading and grading, specifically).

What I've found remarkable is how much more attentive I am to my primary tasks and how well I retain information. At this point, I'm only able to knit stockinette in the round, but that's okay! A task like grading, which I actually loathe, has become much less stressful for me if I knit while doing it. I concentrate so much better, which seems odd considering my hands are working busily at something else, and as a result I am more effective in my comments to my students.

Incorporating knitting as an activity for my students would be difficult; college courses meet too few times. I do wish I could try it, though! I know I posted several months ago that I would be offended if a student were to knit during my class. My views have changed completely.

Thanks, Julie!!

What a great article! When I taught 8th Lanugage Arts, I would always encourage my ADD/ADHD students to have something in their hands-a stress ball, a little clay, a small piece of fabric. It would be wonderful if their actions could eventually produce a sock or scarf!

I knit in class all the time and also happen to be one of the most active (if not THE most active) discussion participants in class.
