View Full Version : KH Monthly Challenge--December PICTURES start p. 12!!!

I'm going to do this challenge a bit different. Usually I try to pick topics that can be interpreted in many ways, or that can be "completed" through many different products. This time, though, I'm going to ask everyone to knit the same thing.

You will need less than a skein of yarn. Gauge is unimportant, but you might want to sift through your stash and find a "Decemberish" color (but if orange is your thing, go for it).

Other Items:
some kind of stuffing (yarn, cotton balls, roving, batting, etc)
yarn needle
about 90 minutes of knitting time

Most important: you will be giving this item away. Think of a recipient... or keep it for an "emergency" gift.... put it under the tree at your church.... a hostess gift.....

Oh, and I'm not telling you what it is

I will post the pattern this weekend!

Knit 4 Rows

Repeat Rows 31 & 32 for 32 total rows (end w/row 32)

Fold in half, whipstitch or crochet 3 sides together, stuff with your “stuffing”, and whipstitch or crochet the last side closed.

Optional:
Make and attach an icord loop for a “hanger”

This pattern is based on, but not an exact copy of, a Nicky Epstein patter, with a bit of Hildie thrown in..... so if there's something wrong with it, we'll blame her not me :teehee:

I think after you knit the 4 rows, you are supposed to repeat rows 31 and 32 for a total of 32 rows after that.

I might be wrong though.

Hildegard_von_Knittin

Yeah that's right.... you're basically going tohave 2 halves..... one has a pattern, and the other is just stockinette stitch with a 2 stitch garter border.

I thought that part might be confusing, sorry about that :pout:

How about the fiber? Would we be best off to use wool, or cotton or???

Hildegard_von_Knittin
12-01-2006, 08:25 PM
You can use any yarn, and needles appropriate for that yarn. A slightly tighter gauge then recommended might be better so your stuffing dosn't come out.

If I posted the picture, it would ruin the surprise!! You're just going to have to trust my jedgement :teehee:

and

R26-K2, P1, K1, P1, K1, P11, K2

should be:

I believe these are also errors? The pattern seems to be equal sides so....

R10- K2, P6, K2, P2, K2, P1, K2, P1, K2, P6, K2
The red one should be a P2 so the pattern matches..right?

R13 - Jenelle got it

R13 - K9, P2, K2, P1, K1, P1, K2, K2, K9,
The red one shoujld be a P2

R20 - K2, P9, K1, P5, K, P9, K2
The K should be K1

R21 - K13, P1, K, P1, K13
The red should be K1

R26 - Jenelle got it

That's as far as I've gotten.

Yes, as far as I can tell it's fine. I've finished my little project and had no problems beyond the initial errors which have been corrected. Give it a try and let us know if you have problems. It's pretty straight forward... keeping the rows and stitches straight is a bit harder, but I used a piece of paper with #'s 1-32 and marked off each row as I went. Worked for me. ;)

Dear Ones,

I finished the pattern the same day it was posted xxx

Mine's cute but I had 2 skeins of yarn to choose from and instead of choosing the evergreen one, I reached for the sapphire blue -- oh well.

It was still fun and I want to do one in a finer yarn and add beads.

This is my first KAL -- do we get to post pics of our finished work?

Hilde, I loved this mysterious project and hope you do more like it. It was fun guessing what the outcome would be.

I am going to suggest a project of this nature to my mom for her knitting group. She said they were getting a little bored with the baby hat/blanket stuff for charity.

Best to all,
Susan

I chose to use some leftover cranberry yarn for this December mystery; the front half is done and looks terrific! I love it! I'm going to duplicate stitch "2006" on the back in white, and edge it in white shell-stitch crochet.

Thank you, Hildie! :muah: :muah: :muah:
Hi Denise,

Do you know if there are any links that explain how to do the shell-stitch crochet? I'd love to do a decorative border on mine, too! And stitching 2006 on the back is a WONDERFUL idea! I have the SnB book that explains it, but I'm a little intimidated. Is it hard?

Thanks!

i've been hunting through this topic for a bit, so i might be blind, but i want to get a start on this, i'm sooooo curious.

I was hoping to find out what size needles you recommended, but all i could find was a tip to knit it at a tighter gauge, but i don't know what the original one is. Sorry if it's been mentioned somewhere before, but i cant find it :??

losnana
12-13-2006, 08:15 AM
I used the size suggested for my weight yarn. It doesn't matter what, so long as the needles are appropriate for that yarn. You don't want it to be "lacey" from the needles being too large nor stiff from them being too small.

I've been having a little computer trouble and missed your post! Thank you, MarDi, for posting the crocheted shell stitch link! And duplicate stitch isn't difficult at all; I find it especially effective for for something like letters and numbers on a stockinette background.
