Okay, I have a question...and I'm embarrassed, because I'm probably supposed to know this. When referring to music, what's "EMO"? I keep seeing it and hearing it--what type of music does it refer to? Can you name some groups that would be considered "EMO"?

It's like hardcore punk rock. The band Jimmy Eat World is considered Emo... The name comes from "emotional" so, like emotional rock

It's when they scream instead of singing and their songs are about slitting their wrists and how much they don't need their ex-girlfriends. :P

I promised myself that...I'd never...get like...my parents!!! :noway: Music was my life when I was younger, and I'd always think, "I'll always know what's new and happening--I'll never be like my parents and not know who the new bands are/music is". Yeah, right! :teehee:

If you see a video and the boy on the screen is wearing dark colors and dog collars and he wears way too much eyeliner and he looks really depressed- that's emo. If in another video the boy on the screen is dressed the exact same way and he's howling and flailing- that's screamo.

Can you tell that I have a 17 year old?

I miss the 80's when boys knew how to tastefully apply eyeliner and look depressed without seeming menacing.

Emo boys don't look threatening. They look pathetic. :teehee:

Especially when they wear girl pants. Has anyone seen the Emo Rangers?

I'm not the only one who thinks that!

To me though, Emo is just a joke.

When I first started my job I had to carry lots of manuscripts back and forth and I kept getting papercuts on my forearms. I kept telling people "Look, I'm the emo editorial assistant!"

Okay, now I'm scared! :noway: This sounds kind of freaky. Iggy Pop rolling around on broken glass while smeared in peanut butter was something "back in the day", but this sounds kind of weird. But yet, somehow, I'm curious and intrigued.......... :teehee:

Iggy is one of those rockers you would expect to have died tragically. Saw him on tv a few weeks ago--he looks great!!!

Cookworm, don't be scared. It's more a stereotype about emo kids than anything most of them do. They are the new "goths" who are all depressed and wagnsty.

Definitely almost any current song that sounds like a whiney boy wrote it in a minute. I have yet to see an emo girl band. Also if you see anyone with half a head shaved and the top part is pretty long and flung to the side (reminds me of flock of seagulls without the sides), wearing eyeliner, and their sister's pants in all black (possibly). Maybe also a buttondown shirt with a red tie or something like that. That's Emo too. Usually the music and the look go hand in hand.

Emo seriously reminds me of the 80s when people in the future who liked it in the past will look back on themselves and think "WHAT WAS I THINKING?!" Or...they'll be the small group of people who want it back.

If you wanted a kind of serious answer from a teenager heres one. There are two types of emo music mainstream and then theres underground emo. Mainstream emo is bands like Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Plain White Tees and Taking Back Sunday.. yeah i'm sure I just lost you there lol. Those bands really write songs about getting dumped then laughing about it. They usually have funny lyrics and are usually pretty upbeat. They have lyrics like " dance dance" "tap tap tap your toes to the beat" These bands don't take themselves so seriously.. Then theres the underground emo, which is not as upbeat and would probably panic you if you heard the lyrics. Last but not least there are emo kids.. emo kids usually have hair in their face and look pretty sad but they are actually pretty funny and also don't take themselves so seriously. Just imagine nerds that don't care what people think thats pretty much the attitude of an emo kid..plus emo kids really love themselves way too much to hurt themselves and they spend alot of time on their hair just so they can have a bed head. Just imagine the madonna craze back in the 80s oh and for the emo kids a heart symbol made with their fingers are like how peace signs were for the 60s generations

emo for me was unwound and fugazi. i seriously dont know what it is now.. and honestly when unwound was around it wasnt called emo. it wasnt called anything really. just later, like very early 90's i started to hear the term emo bandied about. i dont know what the music is now.

what genre is the faint? when i first heard the faint i was astounded! les savy fav nad the faint all seemed very familiar nad i couldnt place it really until i pulled out my early joy division and was floored. so whats that genre called? love it.

This does help! Some of the clips sound like they could've been underground '80's stuff. It all comes back, I guess (or maybe it never left? :teehee: )
