Knitting from both ends of one ball

Is it possible to make 2 socks at one time using ML and using the yarn from the two ends of the ball , one for each sock. Or should I divide the ball in half before starting?

I've done it successfully before, and actually prefer it to having two separate balls. As long as it's not a self-patterning yarn (where direction would matter), I think you should be okay.
