Ahhh February... wintery, snowy, windy, gray... thank goodness it only has 28 days!!! In spite of the bleakness of February, we *can* find a little splash of color if we look hard enough...
February's birth stone is the Amethyst, and the February flower is the violet. February is, mostly importantly, the birth month of our beloved Andrea, who ****LOOOOOOOOVES***** the color purple. So, your challenge for February, is to knit something PURPLE.

Red is *so* overdone in February, don't you think?

This would be a great project for those of you wanting to learn fair isle! Amy's video is here (http://knittinghelp.com/knitting/advanced_techniques/).

Purple is one of the spring "it" colors, again, so maybe it's time to start on a cute twin set, or light sweater.

Your project can be all purple, have a little bit of purple, use varying shades and tints of purple..be creative!!! This is completely open-ended... just bring out that purple yarn and make it into whatever you want!

Happy xxx ,
Hildie.

I never saw a purple cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.

We are leaving tomorrow morning for Florida. My yarn is already packed, but I'll try to toss in a skein or two of purple. I'm sure I can think of something to knit!

http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/forum/viewtopic.php?p=357226&highlight=#357226

all through January! I was just a month early. :teehee:

I bought some more malabrigo chunky in a similar purple color to attempt to make a hat on DPNs. So, hopefully I can at least get STARTED on that in February, and still be part of the KAL! :cheering:

I've never used DPNs before...wish me luck!

I checked out the Fair Isle Knitting (http://knittinghelp.com/knitting/advanced_techniques/)...........I think I'll take the challenge on something small (and purple), maybe this little Coffee Cup Cuff (http://www.knitpicks.com/Projects/itemid_50517221/projects_display).......it's got to be small for starters eh? ;) I've never tried Fair Isle Knitting.

I had no idea this site had all those great videos!!!!!!!!!! How awesome! Thanks! :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:

The pattern sizing is based on that fact that it's going to be felted. Red Heart won't felt and if you don't felt it will be too large...at least the cup cozy would be..the coasters would just be large I guess. Anyway you need 100% wool to felt.

Arielluria

Gosh.......wish I had known that before I started!!!!!!! So it needs to be 100% wool? I've never felted before. :frog:

Eloewien, have you seen the Random Stripe Generator (http://www.kissyourshadow.com/stripe_maker.php) ? You just select your colors, choose what row legnth you want for each stripe, and it generates a "pattern" for you (it doesn't tell you how many rows for each section, but you can guess pretty well given that you chose what lengths).

A beautiful purplicious dishcloth! Pattern courtesy of Artlady! I used the microfiber which I hadn't used before so I don't know how well it'll hold up or work, but it's so soft! If nothing else I can use it for a dustcloth..microfiber works great for them! :teehee:

Hi guys,

This is my first monthly KAL project!! This is also the first hat I've EVER knit...so I'm not sure if this is what it's supposed to look like, if it will be huge, etc. I *did* take the time to swatch and check for gauge...so hopefully it will turn out! I've started on my circs as you can see in the picture, and eventually I'll switch to DPNs.

I know it's not perfect (I had some issues with the ribbing), but I figure I've got nowhere to go but up from here!! :teehee:

I knit this, this afternoon. The colors in the picture are strange, it is a small black and purple purse for my niece.

It's kinda hard to see in the picture, I tried several ways to get it to look better but didn't succeed. Anyway, it is done with a strand of black and a strand of purple Red Heart held together. It's the first time I have knit with 2 strands of yarn.

There wasn't a pattern, so I just made it up as I went along.

Well, I finished my Feb challenge project, a scarf I was working on for a while in three different purple yarns. It turned out beautifully. It is the Purl Scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts....knit on #15 needles, so it went very quickly...when I actually was working on it. But 1x1 rib can be boring so I kept abandoning it for other projects.

Of course, my camera battery is dead so I can't post a finished pic, but here's an "in progress" pic so you can see what it looks like. just imagine it 7 feet long with 10 inch fringe on the ends. The yarns I used were Patons Rumour in Hibiscus Heather, Kidsilk Haze in Liqueur, and Araucania Nature Wool in a plummy/deep magenta colorway.

I just finished Modello Giuditta (http://www.magknits.com/Feb07/patterns/giuditta.htm) for my 2 year old niece's birthday. It just happened to be purple so I can post it for the February challenge! The main yarn is Patons Decor and the edging is Patons Allure. I was very nervous once all the knitting was done because the edging was curling up alot, even though I did a good 1.5" of garter stitch at the bottom with the fuzzy yarn. I think the design of the pattern made is curl even more than stockinette normally would. Luckily it blocked really well, even though it's an acrylic blend. I just hope my SIL doesn't have too much trouble with it when she washes it. As long as it's layed flat to dry I think it should be fine.

I don't have any little female models around here - just boys who are now old enough and smart enough to not let mommy put girly things on them anymore :teehee: so you get the pic of it on a hanger.

My Sockintine Swap socks (in the mail on their way to my swap pal) are purple. I really liked this pattern, and I always love Lorna's Laces. I thought this colorway was esp. luscious.

It has been so warm here, in the high 70's. But...tomorrow its supposed to go down to 58 degrees. That's cold for us! :pout:

I made my sis a scarf for Mardi Gras! It is huge and extreme, so she loved it!

The colors are more vivid, I just don't know how to turn off the flash on my camera.

Ok, so I'm almost finished. I'm making a Noni Adventure Bag in Cascade 220 in a lovely purply tweed.

I have finished all the knitting and when I get home from my parents' house in NJ, I will felt it. The next trick will be to get the rings and the zipper so I can finish it. Finding the rings has proven to be tougher than I thought. I really want nice looking rings and they aren't available anywhere I have looked (LYS, craft stores, web searches, etc.) I am hoping the owner of one of my LYS comes through for me -- she said she has sources.)

So while the bag may be felted and ready to go in Feb, it probably won't be officially done til March.

Do I still get a badge?

Best,
Susan

Thanks! I used one strand of Caron Simply Soft and two strands of Luscious by Hobby Lobby. Size 17 needles.

I vote yes on the badge for zkimom!! :happydance: Can't wait to see it.

of course you get the badge!!! And yes, can you post a link to the pattern??? "adventure bag" sounds very mysterious....

Noni Adventure Bag (http://nonipatterns.com/collections.php?show_collection=5)

I bought the pattern at my LYS -- it uses Cascade 220 (double strand) and I had just bought some at another YS that was going out of business.

I love the bag -- it's a fairly simple looking bag compared to the rest of the Noni patterns but I love the shape.

How do I add the badge again??

Best,
Susan

oooo which bag are you doing?? The long weekend, urban daily or evening?

I might have to knit one of those. What is sued to attach the strap to the bag... some kind of ring??

I'll PM you the image code.

Thanks, Hilde!

I'm doing the Urban Daily -- I'm having a hard time finding the right ring to use for the straps -- the ones on the pattern are hand made sterling silver.

The owner of a LYS says she will find some for me. I haven't been able to find any decent ones except for plastic ones made by Clover that I can get at JoAnn's.

However, something Christy posted on another thread about knitting a baby sling lead me to some decent looking colored aluminum rings made for baby slings. I just googled sling rings and found the link. I don't have it here -- I'm at my mom's -- but as soon as I get home, I can post the link for you.

Best,
Susan

:waving: Hi, everyone!

Just checking in here ... haven't been here for a while. I finished my February project -- a purple scarf using this (http://www.knittingwisdom.com/patterns/scarves/mock-cable-scarf.htm) pattern. But, alas, I haven't taken a picture yet. :shifty:

I also have 1/2 a pair of felted clogs finished & they have quite a bit of purple in them, too, but I it's looking like I'm not going to finish those by Thursday!

So, Hildie, got any great ideas with which to surprise us for March?!! Hmmm? :hmm:

Hi all! I just finished my purple projects -- 2 baby hats!! :happydance: The light purple one was done flat and then seamed. The dark purple one is slightly larger and was done in the round.

This was alot of firsts for me:

o first hat (Took me a few goes to figure out a good pattern for decreasing the crown, could still use a little work)

o first seamed project (went OK, some of the seam in invisible/perfect :) and some of it isn't, :?? just couldn't get the lines to match up at the bottom -- I'll have to work on that, but it was easier than I thought it would be

o first project in the round -- I really like the way this looks

o first use of DPNs -- struggled with these a bit as they seemed to be always in the way and my project slipped off several times -- ended getting some stoppers for the ends that helped alot. Hopefully, like most stuff, practice make perfect.

I had wanted to try the Fair Isle but just didn't manage it this go around.

Thanks Hildegard_von_Knittin for the inspiration!!!

Hi all. I wanted to attach a picture of my completed project, but can't seem to figure out how to do it.....I've just been trying to post the picture (jpg file, 80K in size) via the add-an-attachment option at the bottom, but it doesn't seem to add anything to the message body or say why it doesn't add anything. Is there a trick to doing it that I am missing?

Thanks for your help.

February knit-along challenge finished. I finished it before the end of Feb but I had a challenge figuring out how to add my image to my post but I did it and here it is:

http://www.thecraftdivas.com/gallery/Albums/Album2/Large/IMG_0011.jpg

I ended up having to wait until my website and gallery were up to point to.

Thanks for letting me join in.

I hope I did not break some sort of rule or anything but I joined 2 knit-alongs and had a time management issue and combined both into one project.
