A very simple design pattern for squares?

I am making squares or "blocks" for my brothers afghan.. what could I do to make a very simple pattern/design in the squares. They are all different colors and different sizes ( although most are at least 12in squares) for his afghan... It is going to kinda look like Joseph's coat of many colors :teehee: but I would like a pattern to kinda tie it toghether.

I love this mitered square. :cheering: Mainly because when you run out of yarn, it's done. No decreasing to finish the other side. The diagonal row of eyelets will give you something to create a pattern with. I've made baby blankets and dishcloths from it. Just make sure you use circular needles. Trying to do it on straights becomes a battle! :teehee:
