Why are hand knit sweater armholes so big? Maybe I'm looking at it wrong, but seems like most hand knit sweater armholes I see, even for the smallest size, have armholes just under 8". When I measure my sweaters, none of the armholes are over 7" and most are between 6" and 6 1/2". What am I not understanding?

In my very humble opinion, most hand knit garment patterns are not designed to fit closely. That's why I like designs that are more fitted than usual patterns. That is also why I can never knit anything without changing the pattern.

I think the commercial sweaters are knit on machines with very thin yarn and a much smaller gauge, they can probably have a smaller armhole.

Don't forget that the 8" measurement also has extra for the seaming. The seams will use at least 1/2", and sometimes more depending on who's doing the sewing.
