CO 12, knit 14? :o

I'm in a little bit of a pickle. lol. I wanted to do this really pretty lace around a blanket I was making for my mother, it looked intricate but the pattern seemed easy so I thought I'd try it. The pattern was as follows:

CO 12 sts. It is worked lengthwise. Note the number of sts changes.

Row 1: sl1, k2, yo, k2tog, yo, sl1, k1, psso, k3, yo, k2tog
Row 2: k 12
Row 3: sl1, k3, yo, k2tog, yo, sl1, k1, psso, k3, yo, k1
Row 4: k 13
Row 5: sl1, k4, yo, k2tog, yo, sl1, k1, psso, k3, yo, k1
Row 6: k 14
Row 7: sl1, k5, yo, k2tog, yo, sl1, k1, psso, k3, yo, k1
Row 8: k 15
Row 9: sl1, k6, yo, k2tog, yo, sl1, k1, psso, k3, yo, k1
Row 10: k 16
Row 11: sl1, k7, yo, k2tog, yo, sl1, k1, psso, k3, yo, k1
Row 12: k 17
Row 13: sl1, k4, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k3, k2tog, yo, k3tog
Row 14: k 15
Row 15: sl1, k3, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k3, k2tog, yo, k2tog
Row 16: k 14
Row 17: sl1, k2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k3, k2tog, yo, k2tog
Row 18: k 13
Row 19: sl1, k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k3, k2tog, yo, k2tog
Row 20: k 12

Rep Rows 1-20 for desired length.

I started the first row with 12 stitches cast on, only to find that I needed more than the pattern had called for. I counted the first row to need 14, with the psso. So I tried bumping up the number to what I needed but now it doesn't look right and the whole pattern would need to be reconfigured even if I could get past the first row. lol. :S I tried it over and over again, and it kept coming out the same. lol, It's worrying me.

Someone please help me! lol. :)

Row 1: sl1, k2, yo, k2tog, yo, sl1, k1, psso, k3, yo, k2tog

It does use 12.

sl1 = 1
k2 = 2
k2 tog = 2
sl = 1
k1 = 1
psso = This doesn't count since it's the stitch you slipped.
k3 = 3
k2 tog = 2

Add them up and they equal 12.

Okay, I might be doing a psso wrong then, because something doesn't come out right for me. I'll look back over it though. :)

Also, a YO isn't made with a k1, it's just a YO and the YOs don't count as using up a stitch, they make 1 to counteract the k2tog and psso. So if you start with 12, you should end up with 12.

When you pass the slipped stitch over, you have to drop it off the needle, like you do when you bind off. Is that the part you're missing?

I think that might have been what I was doing wrong, because I went back and reviewed how it was done and it's worked out every time since. :D I feel silly that I didn't realize this sooner though. lol. Thank you everyone for your kind words and advice! :)
