Aside from knitting, I'm quite addicted to something I never thought I could be. I'm a horrible asthmatic and can't wear traditional perfumes. I thought I couldn't wear ANY perfumes but that turns out not to be the case. I know a couple of knitters I've met through this forum are also into BPAL (Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (http://www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com) perfume oils), but I just wondered if there were more out there - or if there were any who hadn't heard of it but might be interested. The scents are based on historical, mythical, poetic themes and there's something I think almost anybody would like; the catalog is rather vast. I just happen to be thinking of it because some of one of the scents spilled a few drops on my current project, so now it smells of Morocco. ^_^

I love BPAL. The only problem is you have to try it on to know how it's going to smell on you. So I get a bunch of IMPS (samples), and over a week or so, try them on and let my hubby tell me what he thinks. Only problem, we don't always agree. Our mutual favorite right now is Ephemeria, I think.

Is that a GC blend? I didn't find it on my spreadsheet.

I've only been involved with BPAL for the last 6 months or maybe less, but I've found so many I love. I'm an avid LE collector right now. I have bottles of several GC blends, but my true love (King of Spades) is so rare and hard to find. I have 3 imps, but somehow it's just not enough. ^_^

I just ordered my first set of 6 imps! I've been inhaling samples and getting quite nauseous for months now at perfume shops and department stores but I just couldn't find something I loved. I found a few that I liked but they were usually the more popular fragrances and I'm looking for something unique. Thanks for introducing me to something new! I can't wait for them to arrive.

this looks AWESOME, but so overwhelming!!! any tips for the boys? I recently discovered Angel Men by Thierry Mugler and I am freakin in LOVE with the stuff, but I have always loved fragrances and oils and that site looks incredible!!!

If you check out the FAQ section, there's a list of traditionally masculine scents. Some I'd suggest are Dorian, Dee, DeSade, and... well, hang on, here's her list:

BEWITCHING BREWS
Absinthe
Aureus
Black Forest
Chypre
Eidolon
Iago
Magus
Omen
Old Port-Au-Prince
Old Rome
Oneiroi
Namaste
Shadow
Umbra

FUNEREAL OILS
Baron Samedi
Darkness
Despair
Embalming Fluid
Sepulcher
Thanatopsis

DARK ELEMENTS
Burial
Hurricane
Inferno
Undertow

SIN & SALVATION
Anathema
Bacchanalia
Cathedral
Damnation
DeSade
Faustus
Hellfire
Laudanum
Nero
Penitence
Sin
Torment

LOVE POTIONS
Endymion
Golden Priapus
Ravenous
Saturnalia
Satyr
Snake Oil

DIABOLUS
Arkham
Banshee
Bloodlust
Czernobog
Entropy
Fenris Wolf
Hakkotsu
Jabberwocky
Loup Garou
Malice
Pain
Serpent's Kiss
Spectre
Typhon
Venom
Villain

I can personally vouch for Villain, Fenris Wolf, Dorian, DeSade, Typhon, Vicomte de Valmont, Spider and Dee as manly scents. The list I cut & pasted, though, is a little out of date - there are a million more scents now and a couple of those listed aren't available anymore. Right now, there's a whole whack of masculine scents available until the end of the month here (http://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/salon.html).

Let me know if I can give you any more info -- I love enabling people. ^_^

I love these oils. I can't imagine wearing a traditional perfume ever again. I used to love Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea and now it never gets any love. Same for my Chanel. They both make me choke and now all I can ever seem to smell in them is the alcohol carrier... Congratulations on the imp! There's also an awesome forum at http://bpal.org.

You can order samples of any of the General Catalogue blends. They're $19.50 for a pack of six "imps" - 1/32 oz. vials. They're about a mL of oil. In my experience, they last forever, too, so I've bought a few bottles, but only of the scents that I absolutely need to have or of LE's since you can't get them as samples without going to the secondary market. If you're paying by Paypal, you simply send $19.50 + $5.00 (priority shipping) to the Lab at paypal@blackphoenixalchemylab.com or you can use your credit card through CCNow by going here (http://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/sample.html) and clicking on "purchase six." Alternately, there's an address you can send to if you'd rather pay by check or money order. It's really an amazing company.

There's also a very active LJ community here (http://community.livejournal.com/sinandsalvation/) and a searchable, reasonably updated spreadsheet of all the scents with notes and descriptions here (http://www.nattiechan.com/BPAL_spreadsheet.shtml). And I can't suggest the forum (http://bpal.org) highly enough, even if only for the reviews section.

They're amazing - and they change on everybody due to differences in skin chemistry. My best friend and I are constantly comparing what the same scent does on each of us - it's really amazing.

I've have perfume blends I wear for day-to-day, some for special ocassions and some for sleeping (it really affects my dreams!). I was never a scent person before but I totally am now. ^_^
