I love working on the shawls - they give me an excuse for all the pretty yarns I can only afford an skein or two of!

Thank you all for your votes to continue the project!
:woohoo:

Right now, we have 5 shawls at my house, ready for fringe. I am adding fringe to a shawl whenever I know of someone in the forum that needs our support. I'm adding fringe to "Misty Blues" right now. I'll let you all know when it gets delivered.

There are 3 other shawls in progress, and they should be completed in the next couple months.

So, I'll go ahead and start 4 more.

"Blue Skies" will be made with blue yarns (of course) :teehee:
"Rainy Day" will be made with black, grey, silver, and beige yarns
"Angel Wings" will be made with white and silver yarns
"Blossoms of Joy" will be made with nice floral tones

Each shawl will need 3 or 4 knitters, plus myself. Let me know which shawl you prefer to work on! :)

Also, if you know of someone in the forum who is having a difficult time, and would appreciate one of our shawls, please send me a private message.

I'd be up for Blue Skies, Rainy Day, or Blossoms of Joy .... (one, some or all three - whatever you need:mrgreen: ) Those sound like the colors I tend to have in my stash, not that I couldn't be convinced to get a little something more!

I also cast on the beginning of two of our new shawls.

Here is the start of "Blue Skies". I decided to use Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo, in a pretty shade of blue. :inlove:

Thanks Jeannie!

I cast on a couple more of our shawls a few nights ago.

Here's "Blossoms of Joy", which I knit with Madil "All Seasons" yarn. I got this yarn at Cottage Yarn in Mint Hill the other day. It was on the discount porch, and my cousin (the owner) gave me a greater discount, since she knew it was for charity.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3264/2557850054_ac09325858_m.jpg

And here is "Rainy Day". I used some pure cashmere yarn that I unravelled from a 100% cashmere sweater I found at the Goodwill store. It is SO soft! cloud9

I can't remember if I posted this or not, but I have received 2 shawls. I have Shades of Pale and... um... I can't remember the name of the other one right now, and I don't have it right in front of me. Shandeh, I got it from you. :) I'll get them back out as soon as possible. I've got vacation bible school going on after school/work this week, so I'm a bit swamped. :)

Rainy Days is ready for the next knitter.

Sandy started the shawl with a luscious cashmere, and I added mohair. I found seven new balls of the mohair at a thrift shop. It was my bargain of the day: $1.00 for all seven balls. Yummy!

The Moonlit Forest Shawl is ready for me to knit the last section, then add fringe.

Do you ever finish a shawl without adding the fringe? It would definitely save time, and some people may prefer not to have the fringe.

If I see a need for a shawl without fringe (for example, if it's for a man), I will not add it.

I keep forgetting to post that I got Flower Garden in the mail on Saturday - or Monday - can't remember. Thanks Sandy! I need to get yarn for it - I have perused my stash (which isn't huge, but is by no means small) and I have found a problem - I have NOTHING bright! There is lots of purples, greens, blues, pinks with blue tones, neutral colors ... but EVERYTHING is muted. I never realized how much the tone could make a difference!

I guess I'll just have to fix that:roll:

I arrived home last night (around 8pm) and my hubby hands me this box. I notice that's it from Shandeh and my first thought is "Oh no an oddball baby blanket arrived and I didn't remember". I first asked him when this came, he said "oh last wednesday or thursday I think". GEEZ. I of course asked him why he didn't TELL me it had arrived. Here I'm all worried this blanket has been sitting for a couple days and I didn't even know it. So I couldn't even let everyone know it had arrived safe and sound.

To my suprise it was a BEAUTIFUL oddball care shawl. I want to personally thank each and every one of the ladies that took the time to knit the Mysty Blues shawl. It's absoluately gorgeous!

When I'm a bit more presentable I'll be sure to take a picture of it on so you ladies can also marvel at your beautiful handywork!

PS. Shandeh if you are still working on these oddball shawls and need another knitter, I'm happy to help! :)

Kellee, I opened your box last night. The shawl is looking gorgeous!

THANKS for the candles! It's funny how sometimes you get just the perfect thing when you're not even expecting it. I've been looking for little ways to start some family traditions that will have meaning for my kids, and one thing I thought of is to do a weekly 'candle light dinner' just to make it special. And lo and behold, the next day I got candles in the mail from a knitterly friend! Thanks! :)

As you all know, I have some shawls at my house that I've been finishing up a little bit at a time, saving them to give to members of our forum that need our encouragement.

I finished the knitting on the Barbie Oddball Shawl. (I only had to knit one row to bind off, because it was definitely long enough.) I have a bag of leftover yarn that I was going to use to make fringe. But, after looking at it for the past few weeks, I don't think it really needs fringe.

So, I've decided to send it as it is, and include the extra yarn for the recipient as well. Maybe they will be able to make a matching hat, or a scarf, or some mittens. I think since they are a knitter, they will REALLY appreciate the extra yarn! :)

Here's our completed "Barbie" Oddball Shawl! :cheering:

When my sister visited recently, she brought a gift from one of her friends. A handmade journal, to use with one of our Oddball projects.

Each page has a little envelope behind it, where we can put samples of the yarn we used, or other little trinkets.

The journal was made by a company called "Approachable Art" in Texas. The artist's name is Judi Hurwitt.

There are 9 sections in the journal, so it will be perfect for one of our shawl projects! :)

Angel Wings arrived in Wyoming today. It is so soft -- nice job everyone. I should have my second section finished by Monday and ready to send on its way.

Sandy, would you mind connecting with the next knitter?

I am humbled. As many of you know there was a group of us led by Shandeh to work on baby blankets that were delivered to our childrens hospital here.

It is winding down, and there is just one blanket left in this wonderful work. The benefit of the oddball baby blankets are being spread sea to sea and around the world. All started by one person.
I'm sure you know of her works on blankets, shawls, premie blankets, etc. Today I received the last of the blankets that was at her home as she was finishing them up. I found a wonderful box of tea, and thought it was a perfect night for it.
I moved something in paper thinking one of the blankets was wrapped inside. I then noticed the 3 blankets in the bags. so I unwrapped the paper, and found The Moonlight Forest. I thought it a bit strange, as she usually would send a heads up if I was to be the next knitter.
Then I read the book. She has sent the shawl to me.
Some of you may know I had challenge with my health awhile back. Well, that challenge has reoccured, and I am simplifying things in my life.
How can I express the love of this gift? I only know 2 words.. Thank You.
I can feel the love that was knit into it, and will treasure this gift.

Thank all of you, and know this gift will be remembered and treasured..

Bear hugs...

Shandeh

:cheering:

Well I received this shawl yesterday morning and I'm still in shock and awe over it. It's so beautiful and soft that when I first got it out I think I spent at least five minutes just staring at it and stroking it!

Thank you so much Sandy, and everyone who has worked on it. The middle of this year has been difficult with the death of my little brother, and also my older brother has moved to America to be with and marry his fiancée. Sadly I can't afford to go to the wedding so I think it will help me a little to have a big American hug  to wear on the day (this Saturday actually).

I really do appreciate the yarn as well. I think I'll make a winter headband and maybe even mitts if I have enough left.

Anyway, thank you, thank you and thank you all again

I'm starting to think Blue Skies isn't going to make it here:pout: I know it was sent a while ago, and the post office said it might be awhile - like 4 weeks - but I think that was a few months ago. Since it was coming from Canada, there is no tracking. Maybe if we all hope REALLY hard, it will turn up!

I am really happy, though, that some shawls have new loving homes. I hope they can give you both some comfort:hug:

Be thinking about which one you want to work on, so we can get a list of knitters signed up to work on them. If you want, I can wait until January to send them out, so we can all concentrate on our holiday knitting. :)

"Forest Greens" - greens

Hi MGM :waving:

Our shawls are kept on the same circular needle throughout it's creation. You're welcome to knit your section with straights, but you'll need to put it back on the circular needle before sending it on to the next knitter.

You probably already know, but we use NICE light worsted, or DK/sportweight yarn for our shawls. We like to use yarns that a knitter would appreciate, since we give our shawls to knitters here in the forum that need our encouragement.

If your budget is tight, let me know, and I'll be glad to share a skein of my yarn for you to use.

We each usually knit twice on the shawl, so there is a nice pattern to the shawl.

lissaplus2, I've added you to the "Pink Passion" shawl.

This past weekend, I finished adding fringe to one of our older shawls. The "Candy Shop" shawl. I hate to say it, but it didn't turn out that well. :pout: The colors just don't work, in my opinion. But, a very young person might like it. So, we'll have to keep our eyes and ears peeled for a young person that needs our encouragement.

Here's the "Candy Shop" shawl.
Maybe we should rename it the "Pueblo Shawl" or something.

Wow! I need to get started on some more shawls! Blossoms of Joy is the only one still going around, and it's almost ready to head my way to finish up.

Are you all still wanting to make more shawls?

Here's the plan I have for now:

Blue Skies - me, MGM, threesmom, (need 1 more knitter)
Purple Paradise - me, farmgirl, threesmom, (need 1 more knitter)
Pink Passion - me, lissaplus2, (need 2 more knitters)

I'm still finishing up the following 5 shawls:

That's the plan, Beth. But, I'm okay if we occasionally have a section that is knit with worsted weight. As long as it doesn't stick out too bad from the rest of the shawl, it's fine with me. I think it's nice to see different textures and colors in the shawls.

I'll be casting on a couple shawls this week. :)

Sandy, if you could PM the address of the next knitter, I'll send it along with the leftover yarn for the fringe.

And thank you so much, Mary Grace, for the beautiful washcloth!! I love it! I think you may have just spoiled me for my old regular ones though ... Maybe I'll finally get motivated to use some of my standard cotton and knit up a few.

I just received the Flower Garden Oddball Shawl today. I can't tell you how wonderful it feels to know that there are so many caring, loving people in the world who have me in their thoughts. Before I became involved with these this project I would never have believed that good wishes and loving thoughts from strangers could carry so much meaning; but then I don't feel like the KH community is strangers, just friends I haven't seen yet.
I'm still not knitting again, but hope the desire will come back soon. I have DGDs waiting for socks.
Thank you all again, especially Shandeh who thought of the idea of the shawls origiinally, I think.

Also, I cast on a new shawl for us to work on soon. I used a very dark burgundy yarn which looks so rich and warm. I'm naming that shawl "Midnight Passion", and it should be made with VERY DARK yarns. (Black, Dark Purple, Midnight Blue, and my dark burgundy). Does anyone want to join in on that shawl?

I did "Sunbeams" and "Ocean Fantasy" while I was at the beach last weekend. I completed "Cottonfields" last night.

I used some pretty red mohair yarn for the "Sunbeams" shawl. It will look nice with some yellow and orange and coral yarns added along. Very "sunny". :sun: The red yarn was a gift from Sara at Cottage Yarn (http://www.cottageyarninc.com/)for my charity knitting. :)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3396/3516750137_d35e820819_m.jpg
The "Ocean Fantasy" shawl was started with four different yarns in my stash. Some of them were just small balls left in my basket, but I do know a couple of them by name.

Lane Cervinia "Softer", and Unger "Fluffy Tweed" (the green section). The other two yarns have been in my stash for a very long time, with no label. One of them is a wool/silk blend I got on ebay. The other is a pretty mohair blend. I think they all look "oceany", so they should work well with the shawl.
Here's a photo of the Lane Cervinia "Softer":
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2174/1513836881_2d5cbfe295_m.jpg

The "Cottonfields" shawl was started with some old yarn I got on eBay. It's called "Cotton Carole" by Jessan. I really love that yarn. Now, you will all get to see it firsthand! :)

I'm still working on the "Purple Paradise" and "Pink Passion" shawls. I'll probably be ready to send them out by next week.

I haven't mailed out the other shawls yet either, so I'll just send them all out at once.

By the way, I'm thinking of changing our project in the Fall.
Right now, there are only 7 of us working on the triangle shawls.

I think we'll finish up this next batch of triangle shawls, then switch to a different kind of shawl in the Fall. Hopefully, this will bring in some more knitters, because it will be easier to do.

Here's my thought:
We could make rectangle shawls instead, working on them lengthwise. I would cast on 200 stitches, and we would each knit only one time. I think it would look nice if the shawls were knit with small sections of different color changes. Maybe one inch of each color. We could use different kinds of yarn, including DK, sportweight, light worsted, and worsted. So, it would be a good way to use up small bits of our stash.

Each knitter would choose how many inches they want to knit.

What do you all think?

I've recently started to knit legnthwise scarves, I think it's a great idea to change up the shawls that way. :woot: The last scarf I did was in sport weight yarn, and I cast on 220 sts, which made it long enough to wrap around the neck once w/ some lenghtn.

I think that sounds like a great idea, too!

Thanks for your agreement, my friends!
I'm excited about making a change. I think it will be fun.
:cheering:
We might go back to making some triangle shawls again later, but I think it will be nice to have a variety of different shawls available to give to our friends.

So far, we've given away 10 of our triangle shawls, and I still have 3 more that I'm finishing up. Also, we have 8 more in progress right now. So, we've been doing a good job on the triangles.

Now, it's time for a new shape. :)

Maybe one day, we'll make some diamonds or squares. :teehee:

By the way, we have a new Oddball Shawl Knitter in our midst. Everyone say "welcome" to Mulderknitter!
:muah:

She'll be working on the "Sunbeams" shawl with us.

Now, we just need one person to knit on the Cotton Fields shawl. (it's a triangle shawl, being knit with 100% cotton nice DK yarn)

Hi!
I just stash-dove and found some classice elite Cashcotton, cotton, angora and cashmere blend. Would this work for your cotton shawl? If so, go ahead and add me. No hard feelings if it doesn't, I know you said 100% cotton. I have it in a denim blue and a light pink color.

Susan, hang onto that yarn for a different shawl.
I'm wanting this particular shawl to be 100% cotton, so we can have it on hand to give to a person that is allergic to animal fibers.

You bet! I wasn't even thinking about the animal fiber part. Just the yummy yarn part. :muah:

Now if you want, I could send you some yarn to use for it. I've got some nice DK cotton in my stash that would work well for it.

Blue Skies and Misty Grey shawls are ready to move along. (I think they are anxious to leave Chicago's hot and humid weather.):sun: :zombie: :sun:
They are beautiful!
I would be happy to knit on any shape shawl. Triangle or rectangle----I just like knitting on a shawl that will bring some warmth and joy to someone.:muah:

Sandy, just wondering when it's my turn to work on the shawls I signed on to work on? I think there are 2 of them. I am anxious to get started.

I have you signed up to work on three shawls:
Pink Passion, Midnight Passion, and Cotton Fields

Pink Passion is with me right now, and I just finished knitting the center section. Are you ready to add another section of knitting now?

Midnight Passion is with farmgirl. I'll let you know when she is ready to send it to you.

I have Cotton Fields ready to mail to you now. If you want, I'll send both Pink Passion and Cotton Fields at the same time.

Midnight Passion is ready to go to the next knitter. :cheering: Or it can stay here for a while if Luvmykid is too overwhelmed with the other 2 shawls and I can just pet it:)
