Hello everyone,

i've been feeling unpleasant tensions in my right arm (i'm right handed)
and whatever position i take doesn't seem to make it better
sometimes i feel some tingling sensations... a bit of a worry

i have been using the computer a lot lately (??)

does anyone have any precious tips on stretches i could do?
does anyone know what rsi feels like?
can one still knit with it? so many questions!

one thing is sure, i simply couldn't give up the needles

I used to have that, and I almost thought it was the beginning signs of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but thankfully it wasn't. I was just on the computer too much at work and didn't have my keyboard/mouse properly adjusted. And I didn't take enough breaks to stretch my arms.

Some exercises you can do: (http://www.eatonhand.com/hw/ctexercise.htm)
Extend and stretch both wrists and fingers acutely as if they are in a hand-stand position. Hold for a count of 5.

Straighten both wrists and relax fingers.

Make a tight fist with both hands.
Then bend both wrists down while keeping the fist. Hold for a count of 5.

Straighten both wrists and relax fingers, for a count of 5.
The exercise should be repeated 10 times.

Then let your arms hang loosely at the side and shake them for a few seconds.

I'm not a doc, but I had similar symptoms when I got tendonitis in my wrist. My best advice would be to take a break from the computer if you can and limit the knitting. I ended up in a brace for three months because I ignored symptoms and the brace still comes out on occasion when I overdo it.

I would advise rest. As frustrating as it will be to be offline and not knitting for awhile, it's better than having an overuse injury, which could keep you down for quite a bit longer.

I hope it gets better.

Funny you should bring this up. I have a heating pad on my shoulder as I type. Mine is a problem that come and goes, but it's aggravated by too much time at the computer with bad posture, stress, and picking up my 5 and 3 year old the wrong way. I've been finishing a major project for a class I'm taking and I should have known to take more stretch breaks!

I've find that if I take Alleve for a few days, add heat and little Aspercreme I can get the pain to subside enough for me to live life as normal.

It's better not to do the same task repetitively, so I alternate between my laptop at the kitchen bar, at my desk and my husband's computer. Maybe you could still knit if you were to watch your posture and change the project to one of a different scale?

I haven't been practicing lately (which is probably why my shoulder hurts), but yoga really seems to help my posture and build strength in my shoulder. I'll have to wait until the pain is gone, but I really need to practice more preventative medicine. I also need to incorporate the stretches that dink included.

Hopefully, we'll both be feeling well soon!

Remember that heat feels good on an injury but actually exacerbates inflammation, in most cases cold will be better for an injury or sore joint. I think it will make a difference if you take lots of breaks. I use a ball of wool as a wrist cushion when using my mouse.

I went through the same thing.

Frequent breaks, stretching, just changing positions, they all help.

Sometimes it just takes a bit of time time for the body to adjust to a new thing.

Ok, odd question but I have a point. Do you rest your elbow on the table a lot? Do you have ..... eh hem.....a large bra? I have had similar problems. Sometimes (with me at least) the tingling in my arm is due to my bra strap putting pressure on nerves in my shoulder that run down my arm. Also sometimes when I rest my elbows on the table for a little while to take pressure off of my back, I put pressure on that nerve and get similar pressure/tingling.

If you're getting tingling, I'd advise going to the doctor. It might just be tendonitis, but it might be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and the sooner you catch it the better. I had tingling and the beginnings of numbness...most of my problems are going away. He did prescribe an anti-inflammatory (that I keep forgetting to take :oops:) and gave me different braces and told me to check out an ergonomic website. He said it's probably tendonitis, but to be careful. I do have soreness in my left elbow, and touching that area tends to make the pain in my left wrist/hand flare up.

Definitely make sure to stretch, take it easy on the knitting and computer use, and find out how to make sure your computer is set up in a good way for your body.

A squeezey ball would help you there, I have to wear splints on both my wrists because due to my medical condition they don't stay in their sockets. I can't lift anything heavy as it dislocates my wrists. I've learnt to knit quite comfortably when there on but my stepmum tried it and she couldn't manage a row.

I hope your wrist gets better soon. But if it goes on too long you should see a doctor, it's better to be safe than sorry
