 I'm having much trouble with my first sock. Yup, I'm a newby. Can anyone push me past the heel, and what on God's green earth is a gusset?

Amy has a REALLY good video on heel turning.... toward the middle of this page (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/advanced_techniques/)

One stitch at a time. Once you've made your first one it gets easier. If I can do socks, anyone can.

The gusset is the transition between the top and the foot.

Have you looked at Silver's Sock Class (http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Start.htm)?

This is excellent - I can't imagine how much I would have struggled without it.

Also, the baby sock pattern here on KH is very similar to Silver's, but a lot smaller if getting through something quickly will help you feel more confident -- I am a new knitter and it took me just a few hours to make one toddler sized sock.
