View Full Version : Last Minute Challenge!!! Dulaan Project

Shandeh

Anybody want to knit something
QUICKLY for charity?
I CHALLENGE you to join me in making one or two items, and mail it to be received before the July 1 deadline!!!

The Dulaan Project needs WARM knitted clothing for Mongolia's impoverished people. In the wintertime, it gets to 40 degrees BELOW zero in that area.

The deadline for them to receive your knitted item is JULY 1ST!!!!

That gives you a couple weeks to make something.

Their most urgent need right now is for ADULT sized clothing.
(Hats, Sweaters, Mittens, Scarves, Gloves, Socks, Neck Gaiters.)

Here is the address to mail your items:

The Dulaan Project
F.I.R.E.
107 N. San Francisco St., Studio 4
Flagstaff, AZ 86001

Follow the guidelines for mailing on this PDA document.
http://www.nwkniterati.com/movabletype/archives/MossyCottage/DulaanFlyer2007_color.pdf

This would be a great way to make use of some hand-knitted items that don't fit properly. Give it to those that NEED it!

I plan on sending a sweater I made that was too small for me. I'm also sending the alpaca neck-warmer I made. And I'm knitting a couple hats and a scarf to send as well.

Do you think hats done on a loom would be acceptable? Because if they are, I could get my daughter to pitch in. She won't let me teach her to knit, but the looms are super easy.

I can knit scarves at work without having to think... I'll make some warm scarves. 6' long enough?

I like to do simple projects at work.. without having to follow to complex a pattern. I have time between calls, and during some.

Count me in for some warm scarves!

I have a hat that I made from Outback Wool a while back, but it looks funky on me. I'll have to see if I can find it, I think its in my stash box. I can't guarantee that I'll have anything else finished by July 1 (World's Slowest Knitter, here), but I at least have that!

I have finished one scarf, but i haven't bound off yet, cause i am making a hat from the same yarn, and i thought i could add the leftover yarn and make the scarf longer.

I have about 5 inches left to go on another. and i am making a hat from that yarn too. this is so much fun!! :cheering:

You guys are knitting SPEED DEMONS!!!
You're leaving me in the DUST!

When I saw Lissalue and knitting4babybear at Starbucks this Saturday, I had started working on a warm hat with some WEIRD alpaca yarn. (Bear's words) VERY hairy and not so pretty.

Today, I finished the hat while visiting with Lestrella at her house.

I think it looks pretty good!

I used size 11 needles, but I can't remember how many stitches I cast on. I'll see if I can find the pattern I used.

I made a quick neckwarmer this evening. It only took about an hour to make. The yarn is a SUPER SOFT wool, but there is no label on it. It came in the big bag of charity yarn I got this year.

I'll see what I can do!

I finally remembered the pattern, after some thought.
It was hard, though....and REALLY HURT! :teehee:

I used size 13 needles, and cast on 15 stitches.
I knit the first 3 rows, then did some rows of stockinette with a garter stitch border of 3 stitches. Every once in a while, I would switch to doing garter stitch across the entire row. When I was almost out of yarn, I did a quick bind off, then wove in the ends.

Of course, you have to seam the ends.

Hi! I don't think it matters when you knit it. The main thing is that they get it before July 1st. If they get it after that, then they will save it to send next year. I think the Lily hat sounds like a great thing to send.:cheering:

ANYTHING warm counts! And you can send whatever you have completed. I'm sending a baby hat I made over a year ago, as well as an alpaca neckwarmer I made last month. (I can't see that I will EVER need anything that warm in Charlotte, North Carolina!)

I've decided to stop knitting, and get my package ready to mail, so it will get there by July 1st. (Anything they receive after July 1 will be saved for next year's shipment to Mongolia.)

Here's what I'm sending!

I mailed my box on the 18th. I sent it priority, and used delivery confirmation.

According to the Track & Confirm thingie, my package has been sitting in the sorting facililty in Phoenix since June 20th!!

I know that FIRE is swamped with stuff, so calling them to see if they've actually gotten the box seems out of the question. (the barcode could have been damaged, and thus not scanning properly.) Not to mention that I don't have a phone number.

Should I call the postal service? I've got the feeling that they'll just tell me that all they know is that it's in Phoenix. :pout:

Edited to add:

I called the postal service & allegedly, it's on the truck for delivery today. I'm not holding my breath, though. And of course, no apology for it not being delivered in 2-3 days. Next time I'll know better than to shell out for Priority Mail for a package!

I broke down & (guiltily) called F.I.R.E. The woman who answered the phone was incredibly nice. She explained that the post office holds the boxes for them, and someone picks them up a couple of times a week. This means that they don't always get scanned. She didn't have my packing list in her pile, but said she would call me back at the end of the week to let me know if they'd received it. I thanked her profusely for that (and asked several times if she was really ok w/that, since they're so busy).

And, on a really happy note, they've surpassed last year's total!!! :cheering::happydance:
