Im a new knitter and am trying this pattern for booties.

The instructions are as follows:

Cast on 20 stitches.
1st row [K1,p1] to end.
2nd row Cast on 1 st, [p1,k1]to end, cast on 1 st. 22sts.

It seems cast on is being used as an increase, Im a dummy and dont know how to do this. Help!!

A CO often used in the middle is the "backward loop" method. At the top of the page under the Basic Techniques tab is info on how to do this under cast-on.

Do you have a link to the pattern? I've never seen a CO used for an increase. Seems like it would leave a gap or hole. :??

Can you use knit on cast on in the middle of a pattern too?

I did a pattern that used cast-on increases. The Back Loop method works well for adding to the end of a row (see the videos) - UNLESS you need to increase in that stitch in the next row. A knitted cast-on worked well for adding to the beginning of a row. The trick was figuring out how to add to the row you are knitting without having to knit those added stitches just to get to the next row you are supposed to knit.

I ended up just doing a regular old increase (knit1 in front, knit1 in back) at or near the place where they wanted me to do the cast ons, and the pattern worked just fine. So, in this case, I would increase at the beginning of the row, do your p1, k1 to the end, and then increase in your last stitch as well.

I dont have a link, but here is the pattern. They are really cute booties, but the book I got pattern from seems to be over my head. I am having a real problem understanding the directions on any of the patterns.

They do use the word cast on in row 2, but then say

Cont in moss/seed st as set and taking inc sts into moss/seed
st, inc 1 st at each end of next and 2 foll alt rows. 28 sts.

If it were me, I would just be considering them as an inc. If it were more than one stitch then I would co.
