View Full Version : Designing my own designs?

I have been knitting for 5 years now and am ready to try creating a few of my own designs. I pretty much understand the whole gauge concept but don't know how to account for adding design elements like cables, special design stitches within the body of the garment or fancy borders. Are there additional considerations besides gauge that one must consider? Should a gauge swatch be knitted with the special stitch and then calculate the number of stitches and yardage needed from that?

I think this is what you're looking for. (http://www.amazon.com/Designing-Knitwear-Deborah-Newton/dp/1561582654/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-6339404-6024053?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184636900&sr=8-1)

Anyone know of any online and/or, um ... free ... resources?? I'm looking to design an afghan with cables and colorwork (http://www.ekgheiy.com/grdcrest.pdf) since my chart won't fit on a sweater.

Ek, lionbrand (http://cache.lionbrand.com/stitchFinder.html) has a nice selection of cables, as does Knitting on the Net (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches.htm).
Gosh, I don't know exactly what to tell you, birdiesmama, cables pull in so you have to include that in your calculations so I'd say you are correct, gauge swatches and more gauge swatches....really big ones! And the book Ren suggested looks great, too!
