Kitchener and mittens

I'm making mittens and hats for our neighbor's children. This is my first go with mittens and though they were simple enough, I'm not too happy with the finish. Pulling the yarn through the last 7 stitches and tightening didn't create a nice smooth finish. The matching watch caps I'm making use the same type of finish.

Has anyone just grafted the last stitches, a la socks? It makes a nicer finish on socks. Why not hats and mittens?

When I've made mittens I used kitchener. I didn't like how pointy they were if I threaded through the last stitches and tightened. I'd say go for it. I've never done it with a hat though.
