Barbara Walker herself discusses this in the 2nd Treasury of Knitting patterns. For simple patterns that are based on Knit on the front and purl on the back the purl row is simply knit instead. You should place a maker at the beginning of your round so you know when you are at the end and need to start the next round. If a pattern is more complicated with knitting and twists and other fancy things on the back I'm not sure how to convert it to the round- but it should be possible for most patterns. You can make round practice swatches to figure some patterns out and then turn them into lovely little hats.
