You can dye any roving or yarn you want, whether or not it's handspun.

There's a thread with some great dying websites sticked here, but these two sites helped me the most:
Wilton's Dying Tutorial (http://keeponknittinginthefreeworld.blogspot.com/2006/11/wiltons-icing-gel-dying-tutorial.html)
How to Paint Roving/Yarn (http://gfwsheep.com/rov.inst/rov.inst.html)

I know a lot of people recommend Deb Menz's "Color in Spinning" if you want to look at color theory, particularly if you're going to spin your own yarn.

It can be really cheap if you use dyes like Wilton's Icing or Kool-aid. Even acid dyes like Jacquard's aren't very expensive. Usually, all you need is some dye, water, and vinegar.

Hope that helps!

I would totally encourage you! I just experimented for the first time this weekend, used koolaid, and got nice results. I had a blast with it! Good luck!

If you just want to try it without a big investment, try this method, hob..........
http://www.gaea-creations.com/koolaid.html (http://www.gaea-creations.com/koolaid.html)

I used it and LOVE my yarn. I think I will wrap the yarn in saran wrap next time, though, so that it steams.........don't know why,......I just run into that method a lot and think I'll try it !

You can dye any animal fibers.......I overdyed some pale colored wool yarn that I bought on Etsy. Give it a try.........it must be addictive........I have a whole stack of koolaid packages on my shelf with my wool, now  !
