View Full Version : White Christmas "Squares" Afghan

I'm wondering if any of you would be interested in participating in another charity afghan that would be made in 12 inch squares....in all white yarns.
http://bestsmileys.com/winter/5.gif

The blanket would be given to a charity I know of in Charlotte, North Carolina this Christmas.

A church in Charlotte does a "White Christmas" charity drive every year. All gifts are wrapped in white, and given to the poor in the community. I think a white blanket would make a nice gift to a needy family, and they would always remember that they received it at the White Christmas service.

All the squares would need to be knit and mailed to me by November 1st, to give me time to seam them all together in time for the charity program in December.

You can use any washable worsted weight WHITE yarn in your stash. You can use any design for your square. Just be sure to begin the square with 3 rows of all knit stitches, then begin and end each row with 3 or 4 knit stitches, then end the square with 3 more rows of all knit stitches. (This will create a nice garter stitch border around the square.)

Here is a pattern I have made that measures 12 inches:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1176/568077339_e9002e9fa0.jpg

You can use that design if you want, or just change the inner stitches for the design you want.

We need 35 squares. You can knit one or two squares, depending on how many people sign up for the project. Just let me know how many squares you are willing to make.

Thanks! :muah:

Thank you both! :muah:

I'll send you a PM with my address, so you'll have it when you finish your squares.

If we only get a few people signing up, I'll just make it a lapghan instead of a blanket.

Woman you are the most givingest knitter I have ever seen. You are truly put on this earth as an angel to help us all. I just wanted to say that.

Shandeh

Oh, that's so sweet of you to say! :muah:

I used to be a single mom, and I couldn't make it day to day financially. The church helped me several times back in those days....paying my power bill, buying me groceries, giving me a HUGE bag full of toys for my kids for Christmas one year, providing every piece of furniture for my nursery for my baby, helping me move from an apartment to a house. They were always there for me, in such a loving, wonderful way.

I've always believed that I should help others if I can, so that's why I like to knit for charity. There's no way I could ever give enough to equal what has been given to me over the years. But, I can at least TRY. It feels SO GOOD to give to others.

Does it need to be White, white, or can it be a little 'off'? I have some in my stash, I lost the label, so I'm not sure if it is true white.

Did that make sense???:eyes:

I think that all the different shades of white will give the blanket texture and definition.

Shandeh, I usually slip the first stitch to create a smoother edge. Should I do this or just knit the first stitch? Whichever makes it easier for you to seam together is fine.

I got started this weekend and my first square is knitting up quickly. I'm using Caron's Simply Soft yarn in white. I used the same brand for my son's afghan and it was very nice to work with. "Simply Soft" is a perfect name for this yarn.

I choose a moss stitch because it looked cool and I never tried it before. I probably have one or two more nights of knitting on this one before it will be done.

I think I have enough yarn to do a few more so I'm hoping to try a few more stitches that are in my reference books.

In case anyone would like to use the same stitch pattern: I just casted on 54 stitches, knit 3 rows for the garter border and then started in on the moss stitch (Rows 1 & 2 are k1, p1; Rows 3 & 4 are p1, k1) with 3 stitches knit at the beginning and end of each row.

I would love to participate too! I just finished a baby blanket and have some washable white worsted weight (how's that for alliteration?) yarn left over, it should be enough for at least one square.

I'm not being stingy, committing to only one square, I'm just the world's slowest knitter :)

I'm the same way! I'm a VERY slow knitter, so I can't knit a lot either. I had to stop making prayer shawls at church for the same reason. I was being asked to make a shawl for a particular sick person, and I was afraid that they would be completely healed before I ever got the shawl ready for them! :roflhard:

At last, I'm knitting:knitting: my first square.

I found a dishcloth pattern (a mock cable) that I wanted to use. Square was too small but the pattern gave the multiple-multiple of 8 plus 2 (or something like that-can't remember).

OK I calculate how much to increase and get a-knitting--:knitting:1st four rows in garter stitch then on to 1st row of pattern:thumbsup:--get to the end of that row--NOT ENOUGH stitches. OK. Maybe I miscounted. Nope. :hmm: Maybe I didn't cast one enough. Nope. :?? Hmm? OK. Frog back to the start of the pattern stitch and try again--SHORT once more. :gah:OK. Frog :frog:the whole thing. Get out the paper and pencil and refigure my multiple. Come up with the same number of cast ons. OK.

Cast on; knit the garter rows; start the pattern stitch; get to the end of the 1st row of pattern stitch. SHORT AGAIN!:hair:

Throw knitting across the room and scare the dog. Pick up knitting again and stare at it, WILLING it to tell me what I am doing wrong! It doesn't answer. :pout: My mock cable square is mocking ME!!!

OK. I'm a college graduate; I'm a logical and practical person; I CAN actually count to 20 without taking off my shoes. Why can't I figure this out??? :nails:

Sit and say compound-curse words to myself when it hit me! :figureditout: Its the pattern! (Can't be me right?:teehee:) The pattern- when it gives the multiple is for the patterned part of the dishcloth only--it does not include the garter stitch border-you have to add those stitches after figuring the multiple thing.

So figure the multiple, add my border stitch count; cast on; knit the garters; get to the end of the 1st pattern row AND
:woot:PERFECT!

No mocking mock square will get the better of me!

I missed this post somewhere along the way. I'd like to knit a square! I just ordered some weight baby soft yarn to knit a prayer shawl for my nana. My parents have an ebay business so they get their yarn wholesale and I had to buy 6 skeins. I only needed 1.5 skeins, so I've got LOTS of white left!

I'll get on the square as soon as I get my part of oddball blanket #5 done!

Thanks Shandeh for allowing me to get moving on another charity project. I know I need to "give" but sometimes its not as easy to do it and this is a great way for me to do something I enjoy and being able to give back to someone else. Financial we don't have much to give, but this makes me feel good to be able to contribute!

And DUH! when I put mine in the envelope to mail, forgot to put a note in there...

Sandy, I blocked them and wove in the ends, a couple are close to 12 x 12.... at any rate, you'll know from the return address! Funny how the different patterns can be tighter or looser than others, huh? I didn't know cables drew in like that!

Wool-Ease or Plymouth Encore would work well for the blanket also. Or Red Heart Soft Yarn. Or Vanna's Favorite (if it comes in white). Or TLC Amore.

Those are beautiful! Mine aren't nearly as elegant, but here they are. aorry about the glare on one of them. I was trying to show that it is different and yet a pretty pattern on each side. The last one should be finished and ready to mail on Monday, Shandeh, if you'll pm me your address.

I love them, losnana! :inlove:

Especially the first one. I've never seen that design before!

mwhite
09-29-2007, 10:36 PM
I love that first one with the alternating purl and knit! That would be a super afghan and mindless! You'd be surprised at how nice just changing from knit to purl looks in a large piece. I have been procrastinating on a multi squared afghan for some time and this project made me stop and say, "Now why the heck can't I do this for myself?" I DOOOOOOO believe I can now. Thanks for letting me join in on this one, Sandy! Love ya, Mary

losnana
09-30-2007, 09:24 AM
The center of the first one does want to pucker at the place where all 4 squares join. Anybody know how to prevent that? It certainly was easy enough to do.

Shandeh
09-30-2007, 05:03 PM
I wish I knew how to fix things like that. I guess real knitting designers know that kind of thing.

mwhite
09-30-2007, 05:45 PM
Tugging a little on the last stitch before you change from knit to purl might help. Otherwise, I find that it happens and usually straightens out when blocked.

Those squares look great! I love them all!!! Where are you getting the patterns?

I'm having a hard time doing my math. I'm using Caron Simply Soft and size #8 needle. I do 4.5 stitches per inch. So I would need to cast on about 54 stitches for my 12 inches square, right? All the cool stitches I found leave me with extra stitches or not enough stitches. What yarn and size needles are you all using? How many stitches are you casting on? Any help would be greatly appreciate it.

I want to start my squares ASAP as I am so behind on all my projects.

mwhite
10-01-2007, 02:30 PM
54 sts with 66 rows ought to work with the #8s. What are the multiples on your patterns?

I used plain jane acrylic on mine but I love the sheen and feel of the Simply Soft. Mary

suziehomemaker
10-01-2007, 02:35 PM
I'm using the same yarn and needles actually!

Just last night I casted on a pattern that fit with either 52 or 56 stitches. I decided to go with 56 stitches because it's easier to seam in squares that are a touch too big than a touch too small (in my opinion). It won't be perfect but once it's seamed up it will block itself and no one will ever notice.

I hope this helps!

10-01-2007, 02:39 PM
:woohoo:What beautiful sqaures everyone! :heart:I have finished two and have another on the needles. I only signed up to two square but I wanted to try out another pattern. Now that we have an injured knitter:hug:, I'll be happy to send the third square to to you, Sandy.

BTW-I'm using dishcloth patterns for my squares-they usually give the multiple. I'm casting on 56 stitches and using size 7 needles to make a 12 inch square--what can I say, I'm just a loose kinda girl!!:oo:

:teehee: Knitter that is! :teehee:

So, I have enough to make a full-size blanket. And I only need 6 more squares to make a lapghan also! I'll get started on the blanket now. There will probably be some more squares coming in this week. I'm sure I'll have enough for the lapghan. :)

Are you blind from seaming all those white squares, yet? I would love to see the finished products when you are done.

I've never had to assemble a large batch of squares like you. What method do you use to do it?

I can't wait to see the finished product! :cheering:

Not blind yet, because I've been out of town for the past 4 days. :teehee:

I have a specific plan in mind for seaming, but I think it's going to have to be flexible since I have so many different types of squares. I'll let you know what my final decision is on the seaming procedure.

Thanks Diane! We have a similar project going on with squares of "many colors". http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67442

Hello White Christmas knitters! :muah:

Today, I spent a couple hours seaming our blankets. They are looking BEAUTIFUL!!! (photos soon)

But, I do have a bit of bad news. :pout:
The church that does the "White Christmas" charity program informed me that they are no longer doing it.
:waah:

So, I will be giving these blankets to a different charity.

I'm considering making lapghans, and giving them to a retirement center. I would like to finish them up in the next few days, and hand deliver them to the center, wrapped up individually in a ribbon. They could be gifts to residents without a family.

Would that be okay with the rest of you?

Shandeh, I am sure whoever you give the blankets to will love them. You are too wonderful of a person to find a bad place to give them.

Thanks everyone! :muah:

It is really easy to do, and the squares being all ready have really helped with the job. All of you did the hard work, actually. :)

Here's a view of the first blanket, almost complete!

Secksiebrat, I'm thinking of giving the blankets to a retirement center, because it would be easy for the caretakers to sanitize the blankets with hot water, since they are white.
