View Full Version : Oddball Lapghan #2 is COMPLETE!!!!!

Yes, it's time to start another Oddball Lapghan!!
:cheering:

I already have 8 knitters on the list, using those who have signed up to be pinch knitters on our Oddball projects. All knitters will be arranged according to smoking and allergy preferences.

If you are interested in being an Oddball Knitter, just send me a private message, and include your mailing address, as well as listing any allergies you may have to yarn or pets or smoke. I also need to know if you have pets in your home, or if you're a smoker.

Our lap afghan will measure 42 inches by 50 inches when it is complete. I'll be doing the border all around when it's done, so that leaves 40 by 48 inches for all the knitters to work on. So, I'm casting on 200 stitches for this blanket, and we will need 16 knitters, doing about 3 inches each.

Once again, we will be using washable worsted weight yarn. I will have the stitches on a size 8 circular needle, ready to travel and be worked on. I'll get the needle back when we finish the blanket, and use it to start another.

I'm going to go ahead and start the lapghan and mail it to chan58, since she's in Canada. That way we'll be one step ahead of the game with the wait to and from Canada.

Here's our list of knitters so far:
(the list is NOT in order yet)

Shandeh (NC)
chan58 (Canada)
carole_ny (NY)
LilHuskiesFootBallMom (NY)
wildforyarn (WI)
hellokitty165 (WI)
cdjack (TX)
karne (MO)

We just need 8 more knitters to get started.

We will start by using new knitters who have not yet participated in an Oddball project.

Looking forward to it. This is my first Oddball knit, so do we use any special color or stitch pattern, or just whatever, hence the name Oddball?

Doubt you want to send this to England. Do you know of a group here that does something similar? I would love to join in.

 I'm glad you're looking forward to being an Oddball Knitter!

You are free to knit ANY design you want. You can even use several different colors of yarn for your portion. Just be sure to end your section on the WRONG SIDE with ALL KNIT STITCHES. In other words, all of our loose threads should be on the same side of the blanket. This will keep the design looking nice. :)

Doubt you want to send this to England. Do you know of a group here that does something similar? I would love to join in.

Maybe I can put you first for our NEXT blanket.
I don't know of an English oddball blanket project, but I have seen one in Australia! http://rugz4kidz.blogspot.com/

I've never done one of these before, but would love to join you. Be ready for lots of questions!

Sadly, I'm allergic to any scratchy type of wool, but mixed with acrylics, I should be OK.

We do not smoke, and have just one dog now.

Anyway, sign me up! :yay:

Glad to see some new knitters in on this! Welcome to your first charity oddball lapghan!

This will be my 3rd oddball project and I'm just as excited with this one as I was when I signed up for my first one!

Can't wait to see this one take shape!

Thanks Shandeh for setting up another oddball project! :cheering:

And THANK YOU right BACK for being part of it! :muah:

My first question, how is it determined who it goes to? Is there some specific group?
We have been considering several options of where the blankets will go. They will be scattered all over the place, instead of going to just one charity.

Right now, we are leaning toward the following:

Battered Women's Shelter
Rape Crisis Center
Orphanage or Ronald McDonald House
Habitat for Humanity (if they will accept one)
Pediatric Cancer UnitsIf any of you think of another option, just let me know!

Shoot! I'm too late to join but can you add me to your pinch knitter list just in case?
Sure thing!

Thanks Danielle! My husband mailed out the lapghan for me to Canada. They wouldn't let us get delivery confirmation to that country, so I'm sad. :pout:

Anyway, it will probably take a while...AS USUAL. That's the only thing I don't like about mailing to Canada. You never know how long it will take.

So, we'll just hang out here and eat a bag of chips or something. :teehee:

Oh! Forgot to say....I'm feeling better. Thanks for asking! :)

I had to look up which Oddball I was going to be working on - I forgot! It looks like it won't be to Missouri for a bit yet, but that's ok. I'm excited to work on it, but I'll still be happy to work on it later too!

Glad you're feeling better. I'll try to remember the name of the project I'm working on so I can keep an eye on it! :)

Shandeh

I think that's the hardest part of this project - keeping up with which one you're working on. :teehee:

That's the good thing about my reminder messages. I always check with the next knitter before it is mailed to them. That way, we avoid having one of our blankets sitting at someone's doorstep in the rain for a week.

I owe all of you an apology. First it took me a bit longer than I had hoped, then box sat in the back of my car in a repair bay. Then, it was sent back to me, seems Dotti's address wasn't recognized (my neighbor works IT for them, says it's am miracle anything gets delivered and that we should all tip our mail persons 'big time' because they DO get the mail to us). Then it sat in my house when a chemo drug I take for rheumatoid arthritis made me sick for six days. My husband can't drive, so FINALLY today,my first day out, it made it's way to the Mail Depot where they convinced me to send it by FedEx instead of UPS, and said it would be there within five days. Crossed Fingers that Dotti will get it even quicker and have a lot of fun working on it.

Hi Dottie,

Sorry that it hasn't gotten to you yet.

I am sending you, in a PM, the Fedex tracking number. If you don't want to take the time to look it up, according to them,it was picked up in the City of Industry after 2000 tonight, and should be delivered TO MURRIETA tomorrow. Whether they take it to your house tomorrow or Friday, I don't know.

Hope this helps,

Deb

You know what? I just looked at the receipt from where I took the box. The date and time stamp say 12/07/07 11:47AM. It wasn't picked up by FedEx until the 10th. Whazzup with that?

I could have literally driven it down there in twelve hours, and that would include lunch or dinner, a few rest stops, and heavy L.A. area traffic. And they promised me it would get there Tuesday. My goodness!

Thanks Sandy and Deb, I guess being the new kid on the block (this is my first blanket) I paniced. Especially since the first box went back undeliverable. I will sit tight and wait patiently. It gives me more time to decide if I am doing garter stitch or a pattern stitch. Thanks again, Dottie

Ok, now I feel REALLY dumb. I was running out the door when the postman left the box on my front porch. I opened the box, perused its contents, left a note on here, and was on my way. Now that I have opened the bag and read the attached instructions, I know that the butterfly journal wasn't part of my thoughtful gift from Nannaknits.
It is the journal everyone writes in before they pass the lapghan on to the next knitter.

Our 2nd Lapghan has had an adventure while visiting with me!

Our forum leader asked if she could knit part of it! :cheering:

Amy used Wool-Ease in Natural Heather, and did a nice basketweave design. When I got it back from her, I added some Plymouth Encore that was left over from one of our Oddball Shawls, then tried some "I Love This Yarn" from Hobby Lobby. (I LOVE THAT YARN!) :teehee:

Here is how our lapghan looks now!

Yay! I just love the way this lapghan looks. We have done a great job so far!

Let's try to stick with single colors from here on out, and avoid any knitting that might cause the blanket to "draw in".
Thank you all so much! :muah:

Shendeh- You are so welcome. Enjoy your goodies!
I started working on the blanket last night and have about 1" done. I will take it to prayer shawl ministry tonight and work on it. (I don't like my prayer shawl anyway....I HATE homespun yarn!).

I feel your pain. Homespun is not my friend either. But, I have designed a pattern that uses that yarn, and it's not so bad to work with.

I hold it together with two strands of Bernat Baby Coordinates and make a simple baby blanket. It's easy to knit with that way, and doesn't hurt my hands at all! The blanket turns out so cushy and soft! My granddaughter claimed it right away!

I used "Homespun Baby" yarn, which is exactly like the regular Homespun.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/224/461034873_77ca042972.jpg

Here's the pattern:
Sandy's Cushy Baby Blanket
Size 19 (36 inch long) circular needles
Lion Brand Baby Homespun (2 skeins)
(or 1 skein regular Homespun yarn)
Bernat Baby Coordinates (2 skeins - same color or two different colors)
(Hold 1 strand Homespun and 2 strands Baby Coordinates together throughout):
Cast on 4 sts
K2, KFB (knit front and back in same stitch), Knit remaining sts
Rpt last row until sides measure 36 inches
(or until you use 1 skein of Homespun Baby)
K2, K2tog, Knit remaining sts
Rpt last row until 4 sts remain
Bind off

Thanks! I may have to use that for my new brothers new baby that is on the way. The first PS I made was with Caron Simply Soft that I bought myself. This time, I used the donated church yarn- homespun. I told my mother (who bought the yarn) that the next time they get a donation to spend, they better buy other types of yarn as well!

The lapghan arrived safely in Pennsylvania earlier in the week, when I was out of town.

Thanks, LHFBM, for the lovely yarn, needles, and tea! What a fun package to open!

Must go stash diving to find the perfect color to complement this beautiful piece of work.

As it turns out, the rest of our knitters were not available. So, our lapghan is back home in North Carolina now! :)

I'll continue working on it, and will take it with me to the North Carolina get-together in August, so some others can knit a row or two as well.

I might even take it to Cottage Yarn a couple days.

It will be finished, though, and will go to charity when it's done!

I've been adding some light blue yarn to our lapghan, and ran out when there were 50 stitches left to go.

So, I had to frog two rows. What a pain.

Since the lapghan was off the needles, I decided to lay it out on my queen size bed to get an idea of how big it is right now. It measures 45 inches wide, and 40 inches high. So, it's almost complete!
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2027/2869828206_c7b74c823d.jpg

To put it back on the needles, I used a smaller diameter needle, with a LONG cord. It made my job much easier.

Now, I'm choosing a different yarn to knit another section. Hopefully, I'll pay better attention this time, so my yarn doesn't run out ahead of time.

Since our lapghan is almost complete, I'm now looking for the perfect place to donate it.

I've contacted a Battered Women's Shelter in my area to see if they are interested in our blanket. :)

Woo Hoo!!!! :woohoo:
Contact your local newspapers!!!!

Our Oddball Lapghan has found a home!!
(In fact, I think I'll take BOTH lapghans to this place.)

I heard back from the Battered Women's Shelter in my area, and they are VERY happy to accept our blankets! :)

Here's the email I received today:

Dear Sandy,

I received this email from our Chief Operating Officer, Sharon Thacker. WOW! What an honor that you would consider us for your beautiful hand knit blanket!

I can only imagine how much time and work went into the blanket! I coordinate our Rape Crisis center and our Tree House Children's Advocacy Center in Union County to assist child and adult victims of violence.

At our Tree House, children (ages 0-18) come to a child/teen friendly place where they have a forensic interview and a "head to toe" exam. They are then able to receive counseling/play therapy at no cost to the family. During the medical exam, children pick out a blanket or quilt to either cover up with or snuggle with as a comfort. They then get to keep the blanket.

I would be thrilled for you to see the place! We also serve victims at the hospital when they go through the rape kit process. The blanket would be a special way for our survivors to begin their healing!

Thank you so much for thinking about us and for the beautiful handcrafted work that you and others are creating to give to someone going through a very tragic time. It's people like you Sandy, that make the world a better place! I look forward to hearing from you!

Gratefully,

Believe it or not, I actually FINISHED all the knitting on our lapghan last night! :woohoo:

Now, all that's left is to add a crochet border, to make it look nice on the sides and all around. :)

I think our lapghan is BEAUTIFUL! :inlove:
I laid it out on the back of my car to take these photos:

Thank you, Gail!

Now, I'm trying to choose the perfect yarn for the border. I'm leaning toward a pretty autumn-colored variegated skein in my stash. I think it would make a nice frame for our lapghan. :)
