Hi'ya! :waving:

So I had 4 skeins of "Simply Taupe" MALABRIGO merino worsted weight. What to do. What to do. Another scarf and hat set? Naaah. I have too many scarves OTN right now.

I found a really cute pattern in the Knit 'n' Style magazine called SHIRE SILK VEST, April 2007 Issue.

Here it is! Warm and cozy. Hunting is right around the corner, and won't I be warm with this vest over top of my jammies??!!

Brrrr. It gets cold up on Nighthawk Summit at night. It falls to 20 degrees at night even in Oct. Das jus too cold for Artlady!

I haven't blocked it yet. Blocking will tame the garter stitch neckline and the bottom edges. Perk up the pattern stitches, too. I just couldn't wait for it to block before getting it uploaded here at KH!

Did I mention: it was knit in one piece up to the armholes. That makes things go fast. The only seaming was the 3-needle bind-off for the shoulders. :cheering:

It's soo pretty. :heart::heart:

I wish I could knit something as complicated as that. I'm venturing into different stitches for now. However, I have yet to make an article of clothing. My first pair of socks is in hibernation so I'm only working on a scarf & face cloth. You ladies (& gentleman, lol) are so talented. Keep up the good work!!!!!

Hi Angel! :waving: This vest would be a good FIRST SWEATER project, IMHO. Also, in lieu of the buttonbands/buttonhole bands...a new knitter could just crochet an edging...such as crab stitch...and the same goes for around the armholes.

I gave it a thought myself!

Very nice! I like the neck line!

Is the garter sts along the vertical front edge picked on afterwards? I like it!

I'm doing cardigans right now for my DC and I don't like the edging on the front. At the least I'm going to blanket stitch them, but the garter band looks nice too....

Beautiful project ArtLady! :muah: I have never made a vest, but when you say that was knit in one piece to the armholes and only a 3 needle bind off, it sets me to thinking. That basic pattern looks so simple and you could do a lot of things with it. Might be more inspiration. ;)

That's the trouble, this forum is too much inspiration. All I want to do is knit.

Your yarn is beautiful and the buttons just the right touch.

do you hunt?

Hi'ya Dood! :waving:

No, DH hunts. I love our 20 acres on Nighthawk Summit, and he has done a lot to make it comfortable for me. He likes it when I come along with him for his 5 weeks vacation, one week in May, June, July, August, and Oct.
He brought up (don't ask me how) a 27' travel trailer, and put a snow roof over it and a deck in front. He also brought in a 7,000 wt generator for power, although we don't run it often. He has also been building a big log house for several years, from scratch, by himself...it is slow going as a vacation project. But, he loves it!

No, all I do is KNIT, along with filming and photography, and cooking good meals. We hike around occasionally.
But, we have a mother black bear and her cub very close, as well as a BIG cougar...as evidenced by the fresh paw prints! So, hiking around in certain areas is off limits. We can see the direction the black bear and cub are traveling after a night's foraging. So we avoid that area.

The cougar hunts through our gully, where the deer come to feed at night. We have a CUDDEBACK camera installed on a tree in the gully, and we have captured many still shots of all the activity at night...about midnight til 5 am.

Here is a view from our camp, and me...knitting as usual!http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t186/ArtLadyDMB/100_1443.jpg

Hi AuburnChick! :waving: It was so neat....the buttons were in my button stash! For once, I had the perfect buttons without having to run out to Joann's! Last fall I loaded up at a big BUTTON SALE they had. Yeah!!:happydance:

Beautiful choice for the yarn.

Hi Deb! :waving: I don't think I knit any faster than others...but I can maybe spend more time...don't have a normal day job...and all 5 children are married and running their own households. Just me, DH and the 4 dogs. I knit every night from 9 pm til 3 am. No distractions.

Dang, Woman, you're so SPEEDY! When do you sleep??? I'd have to knit in my sleep to be so fast! :teehee:

Hi Purly! :waving:

I knit almost every night from 9 pm til 3 am...and sleep from 3 am til 9 am. Yup, I am asleep within 60 seconds from hitting the pillow! ;)

Couldn't knit like this when all the 5 kids were home. I am self-employed, so don't have to hit the bricks at 4 am like most folks do.

Yes, the garter stitches are picked up along the front edges as well as the armhole edges and around the neck.

I use a crochet hook to pick up stitches...a Crystal Palace crochet hook (no bumps; straight design). After picking up 10 stitches on the crochet hook...I slip them off the other end onto the knitting needle and put a stitch marker to keep track; then pick up 10 more, etc. If I run into live "reserved" stitches, as in the case of this garment there were about 20 live stitches on the back of the neck...then I just knit them onto the needle...and continue picking up stitches with the crochet hook down the other side.

ArtLady, did you change the balls every few rows this time?

Hi'ya Nat!:waving:

Oh yeah. I had 4 balls...and one (skein A) was decidedly lighter in color, even to the naked eye...so here is what I did:

2 rows: skein A
4 rows: skeins B

And it turned out perfect. I had enough of Skein A, the lighter one, to get me all the way through the pattern.

And in the end, I had about 1/2 skein of the toastier colored skein.

I just didn't want my garment to look patchwork...where one side was bright and the other side was warmer, etc.

Or the back was one color, and the fronts were another color.

Hi Jeanie! :waving: Yes, it is a peaceful place! Nothin' but air, sun, and wind! Lots of wind up at the top! We're going over this weekend for a quick supplies trip. DH is taking building supplies over. Me and the dogs are taggin' along!

This is last October! Since then, our female hound has grown up, and we have added a male hound to the mix!

I found this pattern in the Knit 'n' Style magazine called SHIRE SILK VEST, April 2007 Issue.

I am wearing it now with my jammies! Yeah! :woot:
So warm without being hot. It kinda "breathes".

Maybe you can visit my RAVELRY project page for this vest and see all the details. I hope this link works:
