View Full Version : The last person alive to knit her first Calorimetry

09-25-2007, 10:03 PM
Since I'm relatively new to this whole knitting obsession, I am just making my first Calorimetry

I used the DK weight Evolution yarn from Chameleon Colorworks (http://www.chameleoncolorworks.com/) in Sea Monster. This yarn is insane. It's so freaking soft and silky, you would never in a million years believe it was 100% wool, it honestly feels like silk. If I could afford it, I would knit pajamas out of this yarn and never take them off ever, hee.

That's pretty! :cheering:
You're not the last person to knit her first calorimetry. I haven't made one yet, although I intend to at some point. :teehee:

09-25-2007, 10:30 PM
Very pretty! I love the colors!

09-25-2007, 10:34 PM
This is such a fast knit, eh? I like the yarn you used!

09-25-2007, 11:12 PM
Great colors! Looks like a great fit too.

09-26-2007, 12:04 AM
That looks great. How many stitches did you cast on with a dk weight?

09-26-2007, 12:19 AM
Looks Fab! Great colors! And I've had Calorimetry on my list since last winter....maybe this winter I'll squeeze it in!

09-26-2007, 01:15 AM
Great job and nice colors too! I got on a kick of making those last winter. I made about 9 different ones for the girls so they had a selection of colors. They love them!

09-26-2007, 05:01 AM
I haven't made one yet either... but yours is inspiring me to add one to my list!

09-26-2007, 06:00 AM
I have never made one, but then I have extremely short spiky hair so.... Yours looks great!

09-26-2007, 09:16 AM
Very pretty, I love that color :happydance:

09-26-2007, 09:18 AM
Very nice!

09-26-2007, 10:10 AM
I didn't even know what it was.

09-26-2007, 10:23 AM
I didn't even know what it was.

Me either!

09-26-2007, 10:38 AM
Hee! Ok, I guess I just thought everyone in the world had already knit one since I've seen a gazillion of them on the knitting boards and blogs around the internet. Here is the original pattern (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter06/PATTcalorimetry.html).

Thanks to everyone for the nice compliments!

Yes auburnchick, it is a quick knit! I had a small problem realizing what I was supposed to be doing when I was knitting back out again after the short rows, but as soon as I realized I'm a dunderhead it went much quicker

debb, I cast on 126? stitches with the DK yarn and used size 7 needles I think? I believe I was getting about 5.75 st/inch. It's the perfect fit, almost on the snug side, but only because I have 67 lbs of hair  I wouldn't want to use any less stitches, I'll put it that way. I can see why so many people knitting it with a worsted weight yarn were coming out with ginormous hair blankets when casting on the original 120 stitches, heh.

P.S. I love your avatar

09-26-2007, 11:33 AM
You won't be the last person. Now that I've seen yours, I MUST have one!

09-26-2007, 11:33 AM
I didn't know about this Calorimetry thingy-majobber but I sure want to make one now!!

PS I have a dobie too. Aren't they the best??

09-26-2007, 02:22 PM
Beautiful head scarf. I haven't made one either. I bookmarked the pattern for future use. I'm starting tomorrow to teach two teen age girls to knit. When they get a little experience, maybe they would like this as a project. Thanks for the link.

09-26-2007, 02:29 PM
Your Calorimetry looks great, mine is still on the needles. :teehee:

09-26-2007, 03:50 PM

09-26-2007, 08:07 PM
Very cute! But, nope, you're not the last...it's still sitting on my to do list

09-26-2007, 10:09 PM
very nice! I love green!!!

09-26-2007, 10:27 PM
Very nice and it looks good with your hair.

I haven't knit one, but I don't wear things in my hair so I haven't wanted to. I should check the sizing though...it might be cute for my daughter.

09-26-2007, 11:23 PM
Why is it called a calorimetry? I have never heard that word. It looks like a hair band to me! Maybi it's a trans-hemisphere communication problem LOL!

09-27-2007, 12:24 AM
Cute thingie! I've never made one! LOL!

09-27-2007, 12:59 AM
very pretty! (:psst: i haven't knitted one yet :shifty: ) the color looks great on you too!

i checked out the site for the yarn.. an i giggled at the "mechanically" stretched merino.. i kept thinking of dog food .. it always says "mechanically separated chicken" poooooor chickens!

09-27-2007, 02:06 AM
Very pretty!

I haven't made one either.

09-27-2007, 05:05 PM
The pattern says that "Calorimetry is a term describing the measurement of heat lost or gained".

I had always meant to redo mine when it turned out big.......seeing this thread inspired me to 'get at it' !

Here ya' go, hot off the needles............

Alright!!! Now I gotta make one. We should start a KAL for this pattern. :) Perfect time of year to knit one these for the cooling weather, and they are just so darn adorable! -Ve

09-28-2007, 09:58 AM
dotty, that is so fun! I love it!

Yay, I want to see everyone's Calorimetry! Go crazy and knit seven of them, you know you want to!

It's a very fast knit and perfect for the approaching cool temps! I am eventually going to make myself several to match different coats :)

And jeanius...ewwww!!!! :roflhard:

09-28-2007, 01:29 PM
:mrgreen:sorry.. my brain just works that way sometimes...

dotty- great calorimetry!

10-03-2007, 12:48 PM
That looks great, and dang girl, you've got a nice head of hair!!!

Ummm, Sinstral, where is the pic of your dobie? Aiken is so cute, he is all over Brandilyne's blog. I used to have a dobie. Now I got a couple of Husky mutts. I think they are part donkey, stubborn beasts. :teehee: Maybe my next puppy will be another dobie.

10-03-2007, 12:49 PM
Very nice. I still haven't knit onee yet, i really need too.

10-03-2007, 05:55 PM
You look beautiful! And so does the Caliometry! :teehee:

No, you are not the last one alive to knit it. I am still languishing on the list of Caliometry-less knitters...and sock-less knitters list, too! :pout:

:yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:
You did a great job and that color looks great on you. Try some in Karaoke, they look wonderful in it.

10-04-2007, 04:28 PM
Those are some great Caliometry's! I've had it on my queue for the longest time.. I think I may make some as gifts this year which means I should start now.

10-05-2007, 03:35 AM
Wow, it's beautiful - I haven't made one yet but now I'm going to!

10-05-2007, 07:54 AM
I've got to make one too, left my stash and spare needles at home when I brought stuff to Uni, that is the only reason why I haven't cast on this minute. In fact if I didn't have a lecture in about an hour I'd be up the market buying more yarn and needles so I could start it. Maybe I'll go after the lecture, should have enough time b4 the market closes. Only problem is I vowed to spend no more money this week...

10-05-2007, 08:07 AM
That turned out great, and it looks so nice on you!

:psst:I haven't knit one of those yet...

10-05-2007, 12:20 PM

Here is my boy! I wish I could be napping in a sunbeam like he was that day!

10-05-2007, 04:21 PM
That looks awesome Brandi! I think you have inspired a movement!! I'm going to get started on this fairly soon, I think!

Thanks for the link!!

10-05-2007, 04:33 PM
Okay, I join the list of not having knitted one of these yet...it's awesome. I've been looking for a cool looking headband and this is by far the coolest I've seen!

10-06-2007, 05:54 AM
Here is my boy! I wish I could be napping in a sunbeam like he was that day!

Awwww, look at that cute pointy dobie nose! :) My guy used to get up every once in a while to travel with the sunbeams as they moved throughout the day.

10-06-2007, 07:53 AM
Thanks laika :) I do have a mess of hair, it's a little overwhelming, heh. And it NEVER fits in hats, so the Calorimetry should be perfect! I think I'm going to make a couple more to match my winter coat.

sinistral, your dobie is adorable!!! I wish I was napping with him in the sunbeam too :teehee:

thanks nadja, I'll keep an eye out for some Karaoke next time I'm at my LYS! I just bought a couple (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/Brandilyne/queenslandbengali07.jpg) random balls of stuff (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/Brandilyne/queenslanddelhi09.jpg) at Tuesday morning to make a few for gifts too.

Awww, thanks Artlady!! You are too sweet  I find it hard to imagine that haven't knit any socks yet!! You knit EVERYTHING!!!! And your work is so beautiful!

Sharly, you better have a WIP soon

Yay!!! I hope by the end of the weekend I see a couple more Cal's in here  Thanks to everyone for the nice compliments, I appreciate it!

10-12-2007, 03:06 PM
Sharly, you better have a WIP soon

I've got it on the needles and am working away. I'm not fast, but I'll keep plugging away until I have something. I was too far along when I realized a lot of people had problems with them turning out too big, but I figured since I'm using wool, if it is mammoth, I'll just felt the thing! Anyone else started one since Brandi's post?
