Hi! I'm hoping for some links or directions. I want to knit a pair of socks for my uncle as a surprise birthday/thank you gift. All I know is that he wears a size 12. And I want to use lightweight wool. Can anyone suggest a plain pattern?
I want to add a textured design of my own on the sides of the leg.

I've never made these, but Knitty has a custom fit pattern for socks. They are from the toe up (I'm not sure if that makes a difference for you) but heres the link...

Here is a chart for measurements of socks per shoe sizes. Might give you an idea of how big to go. http://www.fibergypsy.com/common/socksize.shtml
Can use with any universal sock pattern, and make to size required. a few here.

for a mens 11, I used Silver's Sock Tut. I added more stitches (80 total cast on, in Trekking XXL, a pretty common weight sock yarn) and knit the main part to a length of 1.5" less than the length of the foot before decreasing for toes.
