howdy everyone!

i'm in halloween prep mode, and i've been having a heck of a time finding myself a wig. my fiance and i are going as the heat miser (him) and the snow miser (me), and i need a head covering that looks like ice (here's a photo of the snow miser in all his icyness: http://www.biggerboat.net/snowmiser/pictures/snow17.jpg.)
i saw a post yesterday regarding knitty's "hallowig", http://www.knitty.com/issuefall04/PATThallowig.html,
and it made me think that i should just be making myself one! so i ran out to my LYS and bought some icy looking yarn, here's my swatch (done on 3 different sized needles to test gauge): http://www.heidispottery.com/halloween

now my question is...does anyone know of a pattern for a skullcap type hat with a jagged edge that might have a shape like in the snow miser's photo? or do you think i should just go with the hallowig pattern because it's cute (albeit a little feminine for a male character)?

any advice would be appreciated!

thanks in advance,
heidi

That would be cool!!

I'm basically just finding baby hat patterns with an edge...I did find this (http://strandinthehandpatterns.blogspot.com/2007/02/noro-kureyon-one-ball-wavy-gravy-hat.html)one...it might be to lacy though or not what you had in mind...with your yarn though you might not be able to tell...

I like the hallowig :teehee:

that's a really cute pattern! i'm definitely going to bookmark it. it's not as pointy as what i'm hoping for, but it'll go into the "patterns to consider" pile. :) i wonder if i should be concerned that i'll have a pile of long hair under a wig cap, so maybe something with a bit more coverage like the hallowig would be better? i'm so drawn to the hallowig even though it's definitely not the right shape!

yeah the hair under it would change the shape and fit a lot...I know the hallowig doesn't have the points but I think it could work and be cute in that yarn... :happydance:

you could start with top down beanie like this
http://www.smallknits.com/karlchen.htm
then continue on to add the points, like this dog collar, points knitted on one by one. could do them different sizes.
http://www.theirishewe.com/mt-static/2006/11/jingle_bell_dog_collar_1.shtml
or this has one piece pointy edging/ridge, could be added later around the edge,
(if you add it to a beanie you could take it off later and wear hat as regualar style??)

yes! i like the idea of doing the dino-ridges separately and putting them on a top down beanie, so i can gauge the size as i go. thanks for that pattern!

That yarn your picked out is PERFECT! I think the hat your planning will be fun to wear even after the party. So winter like. At Christmas you could add a holly pin, etc.
