Here is my favorite project I created when I was spinning a few years back.

The picture is a little dark, but the colors are pretty accurate. I designed the yarn and the sweater together. It is worked in intarsia and each column of diamonds is a single strand of yarn (2 ply) that was spun with the color changes with mostly darker shades alternating in one column of diamonds with a strand with more lighter shades for the next column. Part of the wool was grey, some was white, the tan color is a natural color spun with the dyed wool. First I dyed the colors I wanted, dying the grey and white to get a lot of shades, then I carded it by hand into little rologs so that I had great control over the colors by choosing each rolog or half of a rolog sometimes when I only wanted a short span of a color.

Here are a couple of close ups:

I worked the body and sleeves on a machine but knitted the ribbing by hand. Since I was planning to knit by machine, I made the yarn a bit knubby so that it still looks hand knit. I got rid of my machines because even though it is faster, even for intarsia, which is relatively slow on a machine, I found that I don't enjoy machine knitting like I enjoy hand knitting, it's not relaxing for me.

Don't be afraid to try a sweater. First try to find a small child to make one for, if you hesitate to make an adult size. Then do a simple drop shoulder pattern to start with.

Or find the book "The Sweater Workshop" and make their sweater sampler. By the time you are done you will have a lot more confidence for making a sweater.
