Why is it that my very first cast on stitch is always HUGE when I go back and knit the next row? On the needle it looks the same as all the others, but when I knit that first row, that first stitch always winds up HUGE. What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure what is happening but if it's the stitch that has the tail from the cast on, tug on that tail and see if it tightens it up. Good luck!!

That first stitch is normally loose. There's no adjoining stitch on the one side to hold it tight. It's normal and should knit just fine.

Does that looseness depend on if you use a slipknot or not?

I've never tried with a slip knot. It seems to have evened out, a few rows in though... it just looked really huge at first.

Sometimes things that look like a problem do straighten themselves out after a bit.
