if the yarn was discontinued?

I have 3 skeins of Berroco Gem, which was discontinued in 2006. I plan on desiging a pattern with it, but I don't know how many people would want to buy a pattern with a discontinued yarn. You could always substitute though. What's your opinion?

Check yarndex.com for Gem, see what the fiber and gauge is and look for subs.

Then should I just reccommend those?

Sure, or something in a similar weight and fiber.

If I liked the pattern I would buy it.

I've never used a yarn recommended by a pattern. Always sub, and very often in a diff weight.

Definitely!

I almost never use the recommended yarn anyway- I say go for it!

I almost never use the recommended yarn either, and have made lots of things from patterns with discontinued yarns! Just add in a couple of 'you could substitute this' at the end of the materials list and you'll be fine :-)

I agree- it's more about the pattern than the yarn anyways. I rarely use the yarn that the pattern calls for. I did read an article in Knitting Daily about how one woman used a discontinued yarn for a sweater. A lot of people were very confused about what yarn to use. I think just providng suggestions on good substitutions would be fine.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't use recommended yarn...

But I say go for it too... And I would include the weight of the yarn you are using in addition to others that will work so it's easier for people to find stash yarn to use.
