what weight what yarn

I'm hoping to start a pattern for a sweater in sock yarn, the yarn called for is Zitron Trekking XXL (pattern is "abotanicity" from Knitty.com winter 2007) I'd link if I knew how! My question is this, does anyone know how thick this sock yarn is? Bear in mind I'm in Tasmania Australia so we work on ply here, generally I can figure it out but I need some input here, 8ply is equivilant to DK, would it be too thick?? of course I'll knit a swatch too but want to know what to start looking for!!

i would think that you would use a 4 ply fingering weight (1). its sock yarn! :flirt:

thanks for that, I'm delving further into the pattern now and the guage is 52 stitches and 40 rounds per 4 inches in 2 by 1 rib, that'll take forever!! maybe I'll do another childrens item first!!!

Or you could use the 8 ply yarn and make the smallest size...!
