Well ladies, Powder Puff arrived home today. I will start the last knitted section some time this week.

Also our Mary Maxim ladies finished Soft Hugs. I will pick it up when there are at least two blankets ready. The price of gas is so high now that I have to wait until I can go shopping before I drive that far.

So our first blanket is finished and our second one is almost finished.

Congratulations Ladies! Hugs to every single one of you!!!

Hi Ladies!

I've received Mud Pie and have already knit two rows, so it should go fast. I'm using Bernat Satin in Camel so the silkiness and light colour look yummy with all the other colours!

I have blue leftover from Sky Blue- think that will work?

knitgal: The post office said Snails, Whales and Puppy Dog Tails was out for delivery yesterday. Perhaps you might check your mailbox and see if you got a notice.

Yes the blue would be fine. There are blue whales I think!

Have fun knitting!

It's arrived! I went upstairs right after I wrote that last post and it was sitting on the kitchen table. I was so surprised! Thank you Dangles for the lovely gifts, tea and chocolate are my FAVOURITES! It's like you read my mind.
What stitch pattern did you use for the blanket? The grey looks very snail-like!

:woot: I'm glad it arrived. The tea is something one that you should steep 5-8 minutes. It's actually native to South Africa . They Africans use honey and milk, however, you can drink it as is. It's pleasant. There should be some tea shops there that sell the tea in a loose form. Glad you like the chocolates :) I am not normally a chocolate person, but I can eat the entire one in one sitting :teehee:

Powder Puff is finished now. I bound it off about 10 tonight. Flower Garden arrived home today and I will start work on it tomorrow. Then I have to learn to crochet an edge on the blankets so that they have a "finished" look. I'll take a picture once I have finished putting borders on both blankets. Mud Pie will be in the mail to me some time this weekend and then I will knit my six inches and put the border on it as well.

Canadian Flag is no longer in existence. The person who started the blanket totally misunderstood my directions, although I was quite clear and so were the memos (I thought). This blanket was far too long, each "strip" being one ball of yarn instead of six inches. Fortunately, it was my sister doing the knitting so I could tell her without offending or upsetting her. The next blanket she makes will be done correctly.

So we have three finished blankets at "home base" and one waiting for pick up at Mary Maxim.

Way to go ladies, let's keep those blankets moving!

MudPie is nearly done...I thought it was complete but found I was a bit short when I measured for this shot. It should be on it's way to The Knitter shortly.

It looks SO good Cathy! I couldn't picture how all the browns would turn out, but I really like it. I am also noticing that my section (the darkest brown) is looking a little pulled in- is that just the picture or is it really like that? Damn my tight gauge!

06-01-2008, 08:52 PM
Hey Cathy, that looks great! Thanks for being such a quick knitter. I look forward to receiving Mud Pie and picking out another brown. Yes, it reminds me of those desserts that are many different kinds of CHOCOLATE!!! Now we all know that us women don't much like chocolate but I like this blanket, LOL!

Love all the browns, our first real boy blanket I think.

The.Knitter
06-01-2008, 09:10 PM
Actually I think Sky Blue is an all boy blanket as well. Bold is Beautiful could also be and Snails, Whales and Puppy Dog Tails definitely all boy. Fluffy Clouds is all white so could be boy and then there's Teddy Bear Love which could be boy too! It think we have covered both genders nicely.

CathyB
06-01-2008, 11:02 PM
Actually, it pulls in a little but not that much...i just didn't adjust along the sides when I took the picture. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the result.

My son kept reaching out for it, and he's six months old, so we can say that it's "boy approved" :)

I won't be leaving for the trailer now until Monday, so I should have all the blankets finished that are in my care at this time. I started a new blanket yesterday called Silly Stripes. The whole point of it is to use up our little bits that we've collected from knitting other blankets. It's all garter stitch, but to keep it interesting I'm changing colours every second row. It's going very quickly so far and I'll post a picture soon.

I have few chances to be near stores with yarn lately - what do I need in terms of types or yarn and needles? Do you just arbitrarily choose your pattern?

Here is a picture of the finished blanket, Teddy Bear Love. I just love this blanket. Do you know what I noticed? The section below mine (mine are the hearts) the knitter has put the words "teddy bears" right into the blanket. This is one really terrific blanket. So much love and knitting knowledge went into this one. I just love it!!!

Ladies, I am sitting here surrounded by a rainbow of knitting. I am so emotional right now, totally overwhelmed by all the support and help you have all given to me, so that I could realize my dream of helping the hospital that saved the life of my daughter when she was only 9 weeks old! I can't thank you enough, each and every one of you! Tomorrow I will have blanket #8 in my hands and all it needs is a border. Monday the post office is bringing me #9 & #10, one just needs a border and the other needs some knitting and a border. When those are finished I will be taking a trip downtown to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario.

Once again, thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Keep up the good work!!!

Christine

P.S. the bottom picture is the one closest to the real colours of the blankets. Sorry, I have to take the pictures inside where I can lay the blanket flat to photograph it and the flash goes off, changing the colours. The bottom picture, the one of the whole blanket is the best shot for true colour!

It is the unanimous decision of all the knitters on Teddy Bear Love that this blanket should be mailed to Rabbitrescuer's son Austin. I will be putting Teddy Bear Love into the mail on Monday or Tuesday, along with some small puzzles and things for the boys. The package is going to the Shriner's Hospital.

I wanted you all to hear the poem that Gina V included with Teddy Bear Love long before anyone knew it would be going to Austin. I think this poem is just perfect for him right now! See what you think.....

TEDDY BEAR! TEDDY BEAR!

Teddy Bear! Teddy Bear!
You sweet thing!
What warmth and friendship you do bring.
You’re always there to hug and hold;
To you my secrets all are told.

Teddy Bear! Teddy Bear!
The best of chums!
Get some rest before tomorrow comes.
‘Cause at the dawn of each new day,
It’s with YOU I’ll want to play!

Teddy Bear! Teddy Bear!
Torn and tattered.
You were my friend

Just wanted you all to know that the "Teddy Bear Love" package went into the mail to Austin today. The tracking number is CE 469 216 529 CA. In the parcel I included a hand held game very similar to Tetris; two large bugs called Bug Racers with sticky wheels on the underside that race down windows or shiny painted surfaces; two word search books; a suduko "how to" book including some suduko games; a notepad, some pencils, an eraser and pencil sharpener; a book for Rabbit to read with a bookmark in it; and of course the blanket. The post office said she should get this parcel in three to five business days.

I've had a lot of people asking if it was wise to send a 5'7" boy a "baby" blanket, but my personal opinion is, no matter what his height, he is still only a 10 year old boy. I asked my 8-1/2 year old grandson what he thought and he said "the poor boy is going to love that blanket Gramma". There will be times when his Mom and/or Dad can't be there and he will be lonely and will need some comfort. Hopefully the blanket or some of these other things will make him feel loved.

I just tried to contact the person we are dealing with at the Hospital for Sick Children. She is on holidays. She left on July 21st and she will be gone until August 18th. I phoned back and asked if there was anyone else taking her place and I have been told there is not. Therefore, I will try to contact her again on August 18th so that we can deliver the blankets we have here for the babies. Right now eight blankets are here and finished, one is being hand delivered to me today or tomorrow, one is going in the mail to me today and there are several almost finished blankets out amongst you. I have no idea how many blankets will go to the hospital for our first delivery, but there will be at least 10.

Once again thanks so very much for all your hard work! The number of blankets we have made since mid-March just proves what I have been saying all along:

I will be going away for two weeks on Sunday.

I have to admit, with all the problems going on here with the tenants upstairs I have not been focusing on what is most important. I have made a couple of major errors in the blanket travelling list. One poor woman got three blankets almost at once and it seems that now I have booked two people to start the same blanket. One of them has already finished her knitting on the blanket. I am so embarrassed. Hopefully my time away will help me to clear my head and I will be able to concentrate better on what should be most important, and that is our group and our blankets!

I apologize sincerely for any inconvenience my thoughtlessness has caused. I will try hard to improve so these things don't happen again.

Sincerely,
Christine

UPDATE: Bold is Beautiful is back home from it's last knitter (hand delivered this morning) and all that is left is the border to crochet. Soft Dreams of Spring went to that same knitter and she will knit the last part, bring it back to me when I get back from vacation and I will crochet a border on it. Sugar, Spice and All Things Nice is half finished with my knitting and then will need a border on it as well. Snails, Whales and Puppy Dog Tails is on it's way to me in the mail, and I am hoping to get it before we leave this weekend. If so I will take it with me, along with the other blankets I am working on, and finish them all up north.

Also, there is a woman who lives a few doors down the street from me here. 18 weeks ago she gave birth to a very tiny baby boy. He weighted 2 lb. 6 oz. at birth. He has been in Sick Children's Hospital ever since and will be coming home, hopefully, today!! I have spoken with both of the knitters who paid for and worked on "Life's A Beach" and asked them if I could donate their blanket to this baby, because he is still in the hospital that the blankets will be donated to and because he qualifies, being a sick child. They (both of our Wasaga Pines ladies) have given me verbal permission to do this. I will deliver the blanket from our group, to the mother today, if it ever stops raining. I will try to get a few pictures of this, if the lady will let me do so.

I hope no-one has any objections to this!

The.Knitter
07-30-2008, 01:03 PM
Although I cannot post the pictures on the internet, with the Mom's permission I have sent each and every member of our group an e-mail with the picture of Life's a Beach wrapped around a very tiny little man being held by his Mom, and also a picture of me getting to give him a bit of his bottle. I looked down at him and saw where they had shaved his head to put the IV in, the little bruises on his arms from the IV and from them taking blood samples, I saw the green in the whites of his eyes where his jaundice has not cleared up yet and again I watered up. What a truly emotional moment that was.

I wanted so badly to kiss him, but I thought it was not smart to do so, but I did give him a hug from all of us!

This, my dear kind and generous knitting members, is what our group is all about!

Once again Ladies, I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my poor old waterlogged heart; for your hard work, your time, your patience with my mistakes, your generosity, your caring and your love. Please pass the Kleenex!

You can do whatever you want in terms of stitch pattern. Generally we try not to do something lacy or a lot of cables or ribbing that will pull the entire blanket in. Garter stitch is fine, in fact it has often been featured on our blankets!

I'm sorry, I was away for two weeks and when I came home I was ill so I have not had a chance yet to contact the other two hospitals. I will do that at the beginning of next week. Thanks for your patience. I too would love to see some greens and yellows in the blankets. It would make them so much brighter. We shall see what the other hospitals have to say.....

I don't know Cathy. I haven't heard anything yet. I assumed people were busy this week because of it being the week before school starts up again, so I am sure we will hear next week. If not, I will contact the knitter. I will also check the Canada Post tracker to see if it says it was delivered successfully. Thanks for reminding me.

I have to say that I had another member of our group put the edge on this blanket. She is a very accomplished crocheter and she knit on it last, so she agreed to put the border on the blanket as well. I like that it is nicely ruffled all the way around. It gives a garter stitch blanket that special touch!

I was supposed to go to the Hospital for Sick Children tomorrow to deliver the blankets. I have come down with a stomach bug and have been indisposed since the middle of the night Saturday/Sunday. I am going to reschedule the appointment. I will let you all know when the appointment is after I have gotten in touch with the representative at the hospital. Sorry!

Ladies:

The first ever delivery of our Canadian Oddball Baby Blankets has been accomplished. The lady was very nice in person, seemed totally grateful and was very pleased and friendly once the case was opened and the blankets were coming into view. She loved the idea of the journals once she saw them. The blankets are going to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) of the hospital. They will be well loved there. The blankets are given to a child, who can then take it to tests or surgery, keep it with him/her and when (if) he/she goes home, the blanket and journal goes with him/her.

I was told to convey heartfelt thanks from the Hospital to each and every knitter!

Without further delay, here is what Crycket (a KH member and friend who came and took pictures for me) and I saw when we entered the hospital. I will e-mail her pictures to you when I receive them. These ones are the pictures from my camera.

Pictures one and two are of myself and the blankets getting ready for their last travel as a Canadian Oddball Baby Blanket and going to their first job as comfort, love, warmth and support for a real baby. These pictures are taken at my home.

Pictures three and four are the sign inside the Atrium of the hospital and the statues that travel back and forth on a wire across the ceiling of the Atrium. These statues can be seen from each room in the hospital because the windows for the rooms all face in to the Atrium.

Pictures five and six are the fountain in the Atrium of the hospital and some statues on the roof of the first level of the hospital, placed so that children can see them from their windows.

Picture seven is Crycket, our newest group member, who went with me to the hospital and took pictures which I will send by e-mail to each group member!

The first picture is me standing at the hospital waiting for Karen to accept the donated blankets.

The second and third pictures are Karen holding all the donated blankets.

The fourth picture is Karen holding the donated blankets while I turn them over to her for distribution in the NICU.

The donation is complete!

Ladies: Once again I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for helping me to make my dream come true! Your work is beautiful, the blankets will now be in the hands of little ones who can really use them AND IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!!! Thanks so very much!

Two more pictures I thought you'd like to see.

The one is a picture of Karen after we had packed the blankets back up into a bag accepting the donation, the second is just before we left the hospital, we found a huge sign outside, the sign said Emergency, and I was holding a coffee in my hand. We thought it was funny to stand me beside the Emergency sign and hold up my coffee, because we had hunted around the hospital to find a Tim Horton's; I really needed a coffee!!! OK, so perhaps you had to be there for it to be funny, but WE thought it was.

Our member, CMRab (Cheryl), contacted me last week and asked for my address. In the mail yesterday I received a parcel with many pairs of circular needles and a lovely note. The note reads:

"I recently met a wonderful woman who was destashing her knitting supplies. So I was able to add these to our cause. I have kept a couple to start new blankets in the New Year."

Thank you so very much Cheryl, for keeping our group in your thoughts and for donating these needles to The Canadian Oddball Baby Blanket KAL!

I think she thought I was a little strange when I told her I would take all of her 6 mm circulars until I explained what they were for. She has been designing and knitting/crocheting in miniature so she had decided that her larger supplies should be passed on to other knitters. She does absolutely beautiful work imagine a fan and feather patterned blanket (3in x 5in) done with thread. :thud:

I'm in, send me a message to let me know how to get setup...ie. get the blanket sent here. I have a pile of baby yarn and I know some of will fit the requirements of the Toronto Sick Kids hospital.

On a separate note, I should see if the local children's hospital also accepts knitted items stuff too (CHEO - Ottawa/Gatineau area).

Happy New Year to all the charity knitters.

I have just finished up the Super Heroes blanket which was started sometime last year. Now that the Christmas rush is over, it is time to start on some charity knitting again. Christine and I decided that this blanket really needed some yellow, so I gave it a try. I hope you approve.

Missibob, you certainly can work on a blanket yourself. I actually have one that I work on occasionally. If you want it to go to Sick Kids in Toronto, there are a few guidelines to follow. You can see them here. http://canadianoddballknitters.blogspot.com/2008/04/canadian-oddball-baby-blanket-kal.html

If you want any other info or would like to be part of the group knitting, just sent a pm to The.Knitter.

This is Super Heroes! I hope you are all pleased with the way it looks and how it turned out. This blanket is going to the son of a friend of one of our members. Nolan is three and is in Sick Kids Hospital being treated for Leukemia. I will be delivering Super Heroes tomorrow. Unfortunately I am not allowed to take any pictures of this delivery as no cameras are allowed on the floors for confidentiality reasons.

Once again I'd like to thank all members for their patience. I should hopefully have the group up and running again in a few months.
