Remember the baby sundress I made a few months ago?

My cousin at Cottage Yarn (http://www.cottageyarninc.com) saw it, and loved it. So, I'm making another one to be used as a display at her shop.

Thank you all for the encouragement!

It goes very quickly, and yes mwhite, it has a fabric skirt. You sew it on when you finish knitting the top part. So easy!

Here is the one I made last year:

The pattern comes from "Cozy Knits for Cuddly Babies (http://www.amazon.com/Knits-Cuddly-Babies-Country-Living/dp/1588164357)" by Elanor Lynn. It's called "Buttercup Sundress".

Oh my goodness that is soooo cute Shandeh. Can you make one for my DGD? She will be four in May. She likes pink and lavendar. She is a "princess" you know, so those are "her" colours!!!

It's fabric Nonny. You sew the knit part to the gathered fabric, I would imagine. That is IF you can sew. In my case that is one heck of a huge IF!!!

Gosh, I wish I could! This pattern only goes up to size 18 months, so I don't think it would work. :pout:

That's correct! The pattern calls for 1/2 yard of fabric. You just make a seam to connect the ends, and then gather all around the top. Then, you stitch it to the bottom of the knitting, and sew a hem. Quick and easy!

I'm torn between 3 fabrics, including the one I used last year.

This is SO cute! Since I know almost nothing about sewing, do you attach it by hand-sewing or do you use a sewing machine? Will a sewing machine stretch out the knitting?

Shandeh
03-25-2008, 10:14 PM
It's a very easy seam to sew on a sewing machine. You just get the fabric, and sew two rows of basting stitch across the top, then you stitch the ends together. Then, you pull the basting threads tight to make the top of the fabric gather. Just lay it beside the knitted section and keep pulling it tight until they are the same size. Then, you stitch it to the knitted section.

I sewed mine with the knitted part on the OUTSIDE of the dress, because it looked better than the way the photo in the book said to do it.

The sewing machine will not stretch out the knitting. The fabric will help to hold the knitting in place.

Good luck!

I was wondering about this too. I have a sewing machine, but it is so old. I've seen it chew up and spit out fabric!

This may not be the right forum to ask this, but since sewing has been brought up........I've been thinking about buying a new sewing machine but I don't have a clue where to start.

Can anyone recommend a good sewing machine that doesn't cost as much as a car and doesn't require a degree in computer programming to operate it?

Congratulations! You'll love the book. It has lots of cute baby patterns in it. :)

If you are good at sewing a straight seam by hand, I'm sure it will work just fine. Just be sure to make the stitches small enough to hold the skirt securely at the waist.

I got my sewing machine on eBay for about 70 dollars. My old machine was a Sears Kenmore that I bought back in 1983. It sewed its last seam when I was doing lots of charity sewing. My new machine is a Simplicity Denim Star.
