WOW Anyone catch the knitting in Great Expectations last night!!

I couldn't believe it. This is the old Great Expectations film, the original one. Towards the end, when Miss Haversham's girl, Estella was sitting at her feet and Pip was talking, Estella is KNITTING (I never noticed this before but then I wasn't knitting before)

but her hands were flying like CRAZY and she wasn't even watching her hands, she was watching Pip. So I looked closer and saw she was doing that knitting thing where she pushes the yarn over with her index finger, her right arm didn't move at all! and she kept the yarn very close to the tips. It was amazing how fast she was going. I think someone talked about this before and I saw a video, now I want to watch it again. That must be great to do! Wish I had a Tivo so I could have taped it!

It sounds like continental knitting. I want to learn it. Now I have to see the film!

Cyndi... actually I did too but then I looked real close and saw she was 'throwing' the yarn which is English style, not continental. But it was like pushing it with her index finger instead. I know I saw a video somewhere, I'll look for it!

Victoise - I believe you are referring to the 1946 (David Lean) version of the film. Important because it is NOT the original -- there were two others which pre-date it, one in 1934 and another from 1917. I'm a Dickens-film junkie and have every single version and the '46 is often considered the quintessential "classic" but is hardly "the original."

Hi Carrie! That is so interesting, I thought there were only the two, the second being the recent version with Anne Bancroft. It was the David Lean because at the end of the movie I said "Wow that David Lean is some film maker!" The shots of the moors and water and that convict were just unbelievable. Thanks for the info!
